soil for new rose bed

Good morning. After years of gardening in a shady lot, we've moved and are now building a trellis and bed, in full sun, for some climbing roses. Since our soil is mostly clay around here (south central PA), I'm planning to amend it before it goes into the raised bed. Within two weeks, my first batch of garden compost should be ready, but I won't have enough for the whole bed which is about 12' X 4'. Apart from peat moss and sand, what recommendations do you have for a first time rose gardener? Of all that we do, I want to get this right. There are no (easy) mulligans with soil.

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of two Clair Matin roses for the trellis.

Thanks in advance.

Dorothy
