Help! Here is what poor planning will get ya...

Hi All,

I have been reading a lot on this forum, but never spoken up before- nice to meet you all!

Here is my saga...

I got a kit Poly greenhouse in late September (8x6). Put it on a wooden base, pea gravel on the floor over landscape fabric. I wanted to overwinter my meyers lemon and brumansias as well as a few non hardy perrenials. I sealed the cracks and crevices with silicone.

First the freezing weather with wind came through somewhat unexpectedly. I had put the vent on backwards so the freezing wind whipped through and pretty much killed most the leaves on the plants.

I added weatherstripping and a small heater. Then the rain started, and never stopped. Now I have rain dripping into the greenhouse so it is obviously not sealed correctly. Today I went out to get the heater out before the electricity shorted and found that most of my plants are not only covered with spider mites, but a lovely 1/2 thick fuzz of mold. Those in the NW may understand the mold that can appear overnight!

So- any suggestions on how I can waterproof/insulate/ventilate without losing heat for this puppy? Now it is warmer at least so I don't need to worry about the cold for awhile...

with citrus a least you are probably better not trying to restore it until spring.

At cheap starting point would be to put a big piece of clear plastic over the whole greenhouse. That should solve your leaks until spring. Clear pool covers are better because they add insulation. If the plants aren't actively growing you don't need very much ventilation, and the thing probably leaks enough.

Don r: your hosta are the superlative of hosta. Can't think of an adjective to them justice. Do you do garden tours? I would make the trip to where ever you are! Do you plan on them getting that big? Your gardens are also pristine and gorgeous. I lost Irish Luck over last winter. It was just a small single eye. Never dreamed it could look like that. Wasn't going to replace it, but I think it just went back on my list! Please, keep showing us more!

Ronald, great pics...ah I miss fruit-season. I had a lot of Kohalas this year and some Biew Kiews. The Kohalas were good and had a sort of melon-taste to them, almost like a version of honeydew. I had Kohalas from 5 different trees and the taste was ever-changing between them, but this is because they were grown in different locations and picked at different times. My Biew Kiew was also good, but each fruit tasted like it had been dipped in a liquer...don't get me wrong, they were very very good...I'm just wondering if anyone else knows what I mean by that taste.

LOL Zeetera I use obscure terms and words no one else knows too. I know "top and tail" Graham Kerr the Galloping Gourmet said it while I was watching his show so long ago. I learned it then and it has stuck. The funny thing is I hadn't heard the term in years and only a few times some time back. Very recently I was watching another well know cooking show and the Chef used the term top and tail. The gals watching with me didn't know it. I have only heard Chefs say it. LIL

Oh that's a beautiful specimen. Reading about it, I'm sure I'd be glad to have a couple of those. I love the fact that it is fragrant. It has so many qualities and in looking at yours Natal it appears very hardy. How large was yours when you purchased it? I'm assuming you purchased it locally. What about you Wodka, same questions. Nice to know it grows from a cutting also. One of the things I want to do is plant fragrant vines and plants by the doors as I love that when I'm entering and exiting. Right now I have to walk around my neighborhood smelling all the neighbor's fragrant flowers. LOL Thanks for the information and photo's.
