Composting Rose cuttings

I have added these for a few months and have a pile separate that has turned brown and is obviously thorny. Anyone have an idea how long these take to decompose in a pile that is turned regularly. For some reason my Earth Machine never stays hot (too many airt inlets?) whereas my trusty Rubbermaid Brute 44 gallon trash can stays hot. Strange as the Earth Machine has a bigger volume but not sure if the rose prunings are actually making it harder to heat up. Some of the branches are still 6-12 inches long and I am aware the smaller the branches the faster they will decompose but the amount of rose prunings I take home every week is sustantial so pruning the stems into 1 inch stumps weould be way to time consuming.
