transmission questions

I would like to start by saying I don't know much about tractors. I own a 3 year old Sears ride on lawnmower and the main belt the goes from the motor all the way back to the transmission is broken. I put the mower in neutral using the pin in the back of the mower and it feels like it is stuck in gear. If i try to push the mower one tire spins one way and the other spins in the opposite direction. My question is, will putting the new belt on fix anything, or do i have a transmission problem?

Any suggestions will be appreciated

What pin? Is this a hydro trans?

yes it is hydro. On the back of the tractor there is a "pin" that you pull out about 2in and lock in place to put the tran into neutral. It is spring loaded. When you unlock it it springs back in gear.

Judith, I have heard mixed opinions on that advice. Some think it dates from an era when people planted wild black raspberries and blackberries which would then pass viruses on to their reds, or some of the nearly-native blacks had poor virus resistance. But, for buying virus-free, virus-resistant plants today it is outdated. I have taken this view and have them all planted closely. I have seen a few viruses on my plants but never the same virus on the blacks and the reds and all are still going seven years later. I would say it is best to not plant them directly next to each other. On the other hand many cooperative extensions still advocate not planting them close together. Maybe there is something they know. Do make sure to remove any wild plants you can get your hands on; I think everyone agrees that they are going to be the primary source of the virus that can sicken your planting. Scott

This design has been around for many years. Between the engine and rear axle is a pulley assy with two belts. The center of the pulley moves between the two belts - changing the diameter of the pulley. This assembly hold up well even with a lot of service. Belts are difficult to change. The rear axle is a fixed gear ratio with forward and reverse. If the tractor is tasked with towing, the rear gear frequently fails. Sometimes the aluminum case cracks. The sheetmetal front axle beam is also a weak area. The MTD garden tractor that used this design worked ok. The smaller models are light duty and in my experience - wear out quicker than tractors from other manufacturers.

tomplum, I appreciate your reply. To my knowledge the belts are not the issue......new OEM were used. The other variables open up a new can of worms.I do not think the belts are getting hot but the mower has gotten progressively slower the last four or five times I have used it to the point it is futile to even attempt to use it. It could very well be a tension spring not functioning correctly. The brake does not stick. From your post I would be prone to believe it is a worn drive pulley.........I feel like taking a fire-ax to it and put it out of it's misery but it runs too well [ when it runs well ] Thanks Much !

There is a little more to this "life lesson": If you borrow something, it'll be broken when you get it and must be repaired, at your expense, before you can use it OR it breaks while you are using it and must be repaired at your expense, before you can finish your project and take it back. If you lend something: If you get it back, it will either be dull, broken, or both, or not even the same one you lent out. If you feel that strong about allowing somebody to use your equipment, you might as well give it to them and go buy yourself a new one. You'll spend days looking for this item, never remembering, if you loaned it out, to who, or misplaced it.

Is the shift lever in the neutral position? Sometimes they have to be fully forward.

Belt broke !!!
That might indicate an internal problem in the trans. Can you reach your hand up to the transmission input pulley and fan? If you can get your hand on the input pulley/fan, see if you can turn the pulley. If you can't turn the pulley by hand, you definitely have an internal issue. The fact that the "free wheeling" trans bypass lever is not permitting you to roll the tractor is a further hint that an internal part failure has occurred, maybe even more than the input pulley test. Post back with the complete technical model number from under the seat of the tractor. This number typically is a 9 digit # beginning with "917.". That number will permit us to view the online operator's manual. One more thing, you gotta make sure the park brake is not set when you are trying to roll the tractor after moving the free wheel lever. There have been some mentions of "brake shaft failure" in some hydrostat trannies and some of those failures would result in all the symptoms you have described.

Just to clarify the belt is not totally broken. It has too much play in it and one of the pulleys has a melted spot on it. The tran# is 917-276601 I did the test and was able to turn the pulley and fan. The part that gets me is that the bypass lever wont work. I am at the point that $50 in parts to fix what I know needs to be is not worth it to me if it doesn't work.
