Best tractor for lawn mowing and light earth moving (on a budget)

Will we be doing all this work in one year or will this be stretched out over several years? 2. Once all of the landscaping work has been completed, what tasks do we expect our tractor to perform every year from that point on? 3. What sort of access do we currently have to our backyard and will that change as the landscaping work comes to completion? If you hired a Pro landscaper to perform this work, he would stake out the various areas, shoot grades and then bring in either a small, tracked excavator or skid-steer loader to quickly take care of all the initial dirt work. Any excess fill would be removed from the property immediately and trucked away unless it could be placed in a low spot or used to create a berm. Once the heavy work was done, then he'd use the same skid steer to bring in top soil, stone and any other materials that were labour intensive to move by hand. Hopefully, he could place those materials immmediately but if they were placed next to the area in a pile, then shifting them with a shovel and wheelbarrow would be simple. All of this work could likely be carried out with a single weekend rental of a medium size skid-steer loader and there would be no need to agonize over what tractor with a Johnny Bucket would be best. If your husband does not feel confident that he could operate a skid-steer proficiently, then hire someone. An experienced operator can dig out, carry away spoil and shift tons of new material so fast you'll be amazed. Even if this process was to drag into a second year, all of the above could be done this year. Piles of dirt and stone don't go bad. At least all of that stuff would be sitting right there waiting for the weather to break and your ambition to return. Pretty much any entry-level Lawn Tractor (LT) is adequate to cut the grass, blow some snow and pull a garden cart around a property that is 2 acres in size or less. If you foresee doing more than those tasks once the landscaping has been completed, then perhaps a true garden tractor is what you need, but I don't think that it should be predicated on these short-term projects....See MoreReplacing MTD Yard Bug drive belt
Comments (16)Well, I set off to replace my belts in this way. Undoing the engine bolt worked eventually, though I had to heat it up with a gas gun then hit the end with an impact wrench. Unfortunately that's where things fouled up. The pulleys were seized on. I tried a seriously strong puller, which only bent the pulleys out of shape. So - lateral thinking........ The things that are stopping the belts coming off are the keeps - two rods down the sides of the pulleys. It turns out that they are only held on by half-inch gripper nuts at the top, and are easily removed. Now the belts are free to drop off the pulleys. Further round the system there's a silver coloured link thing. Undo the bolt at the link end, then undo the nut holding the pulley. Shift the pulley out along its shaft so that the belt can clear the keep. There's a big spring in the way, but you can manoeuvre the the belt round it. That gets both front belts off and back on. I haven't tried to get the short belt at the back off, because it looks like you have to take the rear axle off. Bernie...See Moreride on stalls on incline
Comments (31)The detail about how you can "floor it", or "press the gas to the floor" and keep it going. Does this Yardman actually have a foot operated "gas pedal" that you are pushing to open the throttle on the carb.? Or are you pushing down on the foot control pedal for the transmission, and just calling it "giving it the gas"? Or are you moving the engine throttle adjustment lever on the "dash board" and calling that"giving it the gas? I know I probably sound idiotic "askin' alla these questions"!!!!!!!!!!! But you yourself said this was becoming a challenge, and so we start sifting through the "small details", looking for the big answer. I really want to know: "Flooring it, gassing it", whatever you are doing..........would that action normally increase the ENGINE RPM, or would it make the tractor go faster across the ground, without increasing engine RPM??...See MoreJohn Deere Repuation
Comments (17)"The great thing about good branding is that the product doesn't need to be better than the competition. As long as it is equal or nearly as good, the well branded product will win the sale and also command a higher price." Brands don't build equity unless they are indeed better then the competition in some measurable way. "Better" can be the product itself, service associated with the product, value retention, etc. JD earned its reputation by building good products, which translates overtime to brand equity. Good mfg's guard that equity because it has a direct value. Sometimes a Mfg will trade some of that equity to expand their market share. JD did this with the line of tractors they sell to the big box stores. I'm sure their objective is to have the the best tractor in the box store, relative to the competition in that store... "best" being a combination of the product and JD service. There's a fine line here ... the product has to be priced competitively, so its components and materials are going to be comparable to other "high end" tractors at HD, Lowes and Sears. Less tangible are JD quality control (at mfg), engineering, and service. Brand equity. Being successful at this is another matter. It's a gamble to the extent that competiton in this market may make a better mouse trap, or be able to sell theirs for less. I'm sure JD has an acceptable level of risk to their brand equity that they are willing to take to be in the big box store. It's too big a market for them to not be in....See Morelongshore58
