I'd suggest ripping out as much of it as you can find, then laying down sheets of cardboard (or newspaper in layers at least four sheets' thick) over the ground. Overlap the sheets so there are no gaps between them. Top the cardboard/newspaper with at least two inches of mulch, and leave it for a few months. Any creeping Jenny that still emerges should be pulled ASAP, or spot-treated with Round-Up by painting/wiping it directly on the leaves (avoid spraying which might travel to plants you want to keep). In time (if you're in a wet climate), the cardboard/newspaper will break down, but by then, the creeping Jenny will have been smothered to death. Additionally, any weed seeds falling onto the mulch will be prevented from getting to the soil by the cardboard/newspaper, and can be pulled very easily if they sprout. Once the creeping Jenny is gone, consider other short-growing plants to fill the ground. Low-growing Sedums were mentioned, but there are many others. Consider Prunella, Thymus, various short-growing Campanula and Geranium, Dianthus, Lithodora, Lamium, low-growing Nepeta or Salvia or Veronica, etc. Also consider self-seeding annuals for this "job" -- their root systems won't become as substantial as perennials, and if you don't like them or if they start spreading too much from year to year, just keep them from flowering/seeding and there won't be a new generation. :-) ~Christopher

Ironically I was JUST about to write a post about Creeping Jenny and how to get rid of it! I planted it a few years ago in a bed that I eventually decided I wanted Iris in. The Iris were beautiful the first couple of years...until the @#$%& Jenny grew all over it. Iris cannot be unexposed at the top of the rhizome, and as a result they were infested with borers this year. Now I'm going to remake the bed - took out all the iris, bleached to kill borers, and want to kill the @#$%& Jenny before I replant them. But I tried just digging it up and find the roots are impossible to get out. Any ideas on how I can completely eradicate this mistake? Will Roundup get all the roots? TIA, Westy

I have had creeping jenny, the golden variety, in my hanging baskets. At the end of each season I leave the plastic basket in the yard. The creeping jenny looks dead but springs to life quickly in the spring. I am in zone 5. Then all I need do is re-plant the basket with more annuals, or pull out the jenny root balls, change the potting mix, and re-plant. My husband dumped one of the baskets in the garden last fall. I was out of town, and told him to dump the dirt of any basket hit by frost into the garden. Now I have several small golden jennies going to town in the garden. I will have to get them out of there quickly. I have a side garden (the “purple and gold” bed) where I do allow it to grow unimpeded: because it can’t escape into more valuable real estate. Though they are small and hard to see, creeping jenny flowers and sets seed. Not a lot, but some. So watch where your planters are for unwanted volunteers at the base.

I'm wondering if your pot has drainage holes? Not sure what you mean when you say you planted in "a 12 gallon stone container with 1” of pebbles underneath". If the stone container does not have drainage holes it's not suitable as a planter. Agree with Patty that the volume of the container is much too large for a band. Usually bands go into 1-2 gallon pots & are shifted into larger ones as the roots fill the container. Often another ingredient is added to the potting soil/compost/manure mixture, to keep the mix from compacting & ensure free drainage & oxygen for the roots, such as perlite or pea gravel. Twelve gallons of potting mix without that extra would likely stay fairly wet below the level of the rose even if the top portion around the rose allowed evaporation. If the stone container is glazed, that seal will prevent the bulk of the moisture from evaporating. My best guess is that the volume of your mix is keeping the soil too wet & that souring is what your leaves are reflecting. I'd replant the band into a 1-3 gallon pot, depending on current root volume. After repotting the rose, you could scoop out enough of the soil in the stone container to be able to elevate the rose's new pot above the remaining soil. When I want to display a rose in pretty pot that's too large for it, I use a nursery pot the proper size for the rose & use something else to elevate it in the pretty container so it looks like it's planted directly when it's not. Typically that's a stack of nursery pots upside down with the drainage holes aligned with those of the pot that actually holds the rose. If the pretty container is too wide for the rose's pot, a hanging basket pot of wire or plastic of the right width can go beneath the rose's pot & the differing widths be hidden with sheet moss.
