Front-yard
Comments (3)I'd some day widen the steps and walk approaching the entrance in order for it to be compatable with the size of the house. I'd ditch the looping curves. (To me, they seem like a whim imposed for no good reason) Instead use sweeping curves that go somewhere. I'd also ditch the little tree (1) position that will cover up a central feature of the house, in favor of a larger tree at the right side of the front yard that will help the house look nestled in rather than sitting lonely on top of the ground. I know the well meaning advice to enclose the walk leading to the front door with plant material is given from all corners--even professionals--but I would resist listening to it and let the grass come to the fore side of the walk. Drive around and observe the "enclosed" arrangement in real life and see what it becomes in a a relatively short time and then, down the road. It's practically a "Do Not Enter" sign. I'm imposing these ideas on your plan so you can see generally what they look like in that view. Everyone here knows I show the basics. You can adjust, add plants, subdivide shapes (in a geometrically compatible way,) delete, pick species that spins your beanie or whatever you want ... at your own risk, of course....See MoreSoil for Double Knockout Rose Tree in container.
Comments (1)I'm very curious to see what answers you get because I'm not an expert at all when it comes to the exact soil etc. From what I have heard KOs are no picky at all about they're soil conditions. I'll tell you what I do for my roses that I have in containers right now. I use organic potting soil a mixture of the cheap organicic compost from Lowe's and do a miniture of half and half. I also when I make my mixture I add in some organic bone meal then I top it off like mulch with the organic compost. I then immediately water once planted with fish fertilizer. I have had great success doing this and my roses in my containers are fuss free and pretty. I won't comment on the container type because I do not think I know myself how to pick one. Maybe this isn't the correct way but it works so far for me.ð Elce...See MoreHow do you make a knockout rose into a tree?
Comments (2)Tree or standard roses can be made without grafting. Select a strong vertical shoot. Prune to 3' or whatever. Dig out the budeyes except for a few at the top. (These are where every leaf is or was attached.) Remove all the other basal shoots at the graft. Install a permanent stake and fasten the standard (trunk) to it. When new shoots appear at the top, pinch out the tips when they are around a foot long to encourage branching. Rip out new basal shoots as they appear. This doesn't work well with all varieties, as in many cases the trunk will wear out after 5+ years and not support vigorous growth. This type of plant is known as a "self-standard."...See MoreWhich other evergreen trees go well with Little Gem Magnolias
Comments (4)I'm also trying to figure out privacy landscaping for my yard. Someone else might know better about spacing but I do know the Cherry Laurel requires regular watering. Have you considered the Wax Myrtle? 5 ft. growth per year and stops at 20 feet. It is also drought/cold resistant and repels mosquitoes. It's not as pretty though. It would fill in the space between the magnolias. The Mountain Laurel looks nice to me; it just grows more slowly. Also, have you tried mulching to increase the growth rate? I'm also considering the Moonglow Juniper....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
