please help!!! i killed all of my plants!

Hello,

My fiancee and I just bought a house, which came with some great landscaping. Always taking the easy ways out, I tried using some weed killer (that said safe for plants, grasses, trees, and shrubs on the bottle) to kill the weeds in my plants and ground covering. The next morning, I'm not sure what they are called (I think they are a type of Hosta) became droopy and fell to the ground. Then, all the plants started turning yellow and/or brown. It has been three weeks. I don't know what to do!!! Should I pull them? Will they come back next year? Can I cut them off? What "weed killer" did you use?

Since weeds are plants, I don't understand how any weed killer could kill weeds but be "safe for plants."

Thank you so much for the replies, everyone! To answer some questions: To test to see if the plant needs watering, i usually stick my index finger down into the soil and if it feels dry, i give it about 1/2 of a liter of water. I usually put the cold and hot water on equal amounts so the water is lukewarm . The terracotta pots the corn plants are in is 11 inches. There is a big issue with light in my house. I live in the middle unit in a condo so I have NO East or West facing windows, they are all North or South. The only North facing window that gets adequate light is on the 2nd floor where it is warmer, but there's no real place for the plant. I may move it up there though after what naturelover said. I never even thought about the cold that could draft in from that window. Yes those are patio doors they lead out to my backyard and are really the only source of bright light I have for my plants. So here's what I'm thinking. I probably killed this plant in many ways, not just one. I probably poisoned it with Miracle Gro (foolishly thinking it wouldn't go into shock if it had food to eat, hey that's what I'd want is plenty of food if I were moving into a new home, but I guess plants may feel differently). I probably drowned it. And then I probably froze it. Haha. Miracle it's still alive at all. This is what I'm going to do: Prune the dead, brown leaves. Soak the pot and shower my plant as breenthumb suggested. Move the plant to a warmer, non-drafty room where it will get slightly less light, but hopefully will be happier. Don't water the plant for a couple of weeks. Pray. Should I leave the pale leaves on and hope they recover? In the future, is 1/2 a liter of water too little water or "little sips" as rhizo said? Mind that these plants are about 3ft high and in a 11 inch terracotta pot. I'm at work right now, but I'll post pictures of my plants and of their new locks when I get home. Let me know if there's anything else you guys think I should/could be doing to save my little ones :) & Again thanks so much :)

Definition, Bark Split "Freezing temperatures are especially dangerous to unprotected branches and main stems, causing the bark to split and separate from the body of the the stem. In severe cases, a limb will become completely girdled and everything above that point will die; in cases of moderate damage the bark splits and rolls back but not to the point of girdling the branch. Such injury is deceptive in that affected branches may not die until the following Spring or Summer, going unnoticed in the meantime while hidden by foliage. Sometimes freezing conditions will only split the bark without causing it to separate from the core. These wounds often callous over and allow the plant to function normally, but until the cracks heal they provide easy entry to fungus infections. So I got home and dug this sucker up. There were some very fine roots when I scraped away the mulch. I stuck my shovel in and made a wide circle around the plant and got it up. There was some of the original root ball, but when I went to cut some slits into it... most of it came off. Still going to soak it for maybe a half hour. The soil and rootball was actually fairly moist. The shovel cut through the soil pretty easily, although, the soil did seem pretty jam packed... uncertain if it is clay based. I've chopped the soil up to try to make it not one big clump and will not stomp it down like I did when I first planted it. I may mix in a little potting soil for added fluff. I do also have a pellet form of plant food for Rhodies and Azaleas, so I may sprinkle some of that in as well. Here's hoping. I just hope I didn't lose half of what roots there were when I pulled it up. :(

Pic isn't clear for me to see what I'm looking for so here is a guess... Do your stems have lots of black dots on them that turn into long black lines,eventually turning the stem black? If so I have some kind of sucking insect that seems to spread a virus that starts out as a bunch of black dots on the stem,turn the whole stem black-not sun purple. Sometimes it ,most times it effects only the branches the bug got to. I've had all but a couple branches get messed up and eventually die. If it's what I had,it doesn't seem to effect the branches without the bug bites.But the bug bites are not just 1 or 2 per plant/branch. The bug bites are a bunch at a time,close together. If it is a fungus,try Sulfur. Whenever I use Copper it seems to do more harm than good. There are several fungusides out there with 10-14% sulfur. Just NEVER use it with an oil or during the day.Spray it EARLY morning or sunset. If you use it withing a month of using NEEM or similar oils you can kill your plants(been there,done that). Oil reacts with sulfur to make a plant poison/Toxin under different conditions. I think some bug leaves a toxin that causes what I'm talking about since when it starts out it mostly effects the branches that were bitten. Some of them look like they were burned a little - others look like they need a good watering. The only way to tell for sure is to wait. I do not see any totally dead plants in the pics (although sometimes it takes awhile to see) --- try watering them thoroughly and spray bthem off to get the residue off then wait a couple of weeks.

now.. hoping you have a sense of humor..... how do we fix it ....

cut it all to the ground .. wait.. first.. throw away the sprayer.. and the chems.. or at least have your wife lock them away..

then cut it all down.. and go buy a few flats of annuals.. and plant them...

you will hopefully enjoy them this season ..and MAYBE the other stuff will come back ... later in the season ..

frankly.. growing 1500 different kinds of hosta.. i am extremely surprised that you found something that will knock down a hosta like that.. i too am curious what you used.. and in what dilution ....

one of the other plants looks like it might have been a bleeding heart...

anyway.. regardless of the ribbing .... i feel for ya ... better luck in the future ...

and now that you found us.. ASK FIRST .... if there is a next time ...

The number one rule of using ANY garden chemicals is to always follow the directions EXACTLY.

IF it says one teaspoon to a gallon of water, two teaspoons or more is NOT better!

Water the ground really well. You want the chemical to dissipate and get the plants healthy again.

Back to coolplantsguys question, what product did you use? Name please - it would help in knowing what it was before we can determine how much damage you've done.

I can't think of an herbicide offhand that will kill weeds yet is safe for ornamental grasses, plants, trees, shrubs, suspect you have misunderstood the label.

I wonder if this post is a joke, since the poster has not replied. Did he spray roundup on everything and expect it to kill ONLY the weeds??? I really find it hard to believe anyone would actually do that.

I also don't know of ANY weedkiller that is safe for plants AND grasses. Please let us know the name, as I have never seen one like that.

Please respond and clear this up.

Only a few years after I was gardening and before I went organic, I had lawn weed killer. When I wasn't home, my husband saw "weed and feed." He thought it would kill the weeds and feed the plants. So he decided to help me. Not only did he spray the lawn, but the plants all around the lawn area. Needless to say I was hysterical when I came home and found many of my plants looking like they were dying and found out what he had done. I was out with the hose watering in tears. Most everything lived, but it looked hideous for awhile.

Since it has been 3 weeks since you did it, I don't think there's anything you can do now to try to correct it. It will be a "wait and see" situation as to whether or not they come back next year. We've all had to learn by some unfortunate mistakes. :-(

Lol, I'm not sure how long I was mad at him. No he doesn't help anymore unless I am there to supervise. He is too afraid too. For example, when I got the Asian Pear tree(which is looking fantastic!), he need to dig the hole and plant it for me. He was very unsure, and even though I said I stuck a stake in the ground, and it was to go there, I still had to go outside with him and show him the stake and promise him it was the correct location, lol.

Remy, I'm impressed he helps at all now! I'll bet he shivers in his boots. All my hats off to you for sticking with him and not severing both legs. Now, 6 years later, that is a funny story. Talk about learning hands-on.
