The Greenhouse......Its Alive!!!!!!

Hey folks!

As many of you know, each year about this time, I share what is blooming in the greenhouse. Over the next 6 months or so, I will update this page as plants come into bloom. Winter is a great time for orchids to bloom, and this year I expect many many blooms. So, if you like pictures, and you love orchids, join me and come visit my greenhouse.

This has been a beauty this past week. The plant had 18 flowers and the color was unreal. Can't hardly wait until the next blooming. WOW!

Once again Cym Golden Elf has out down its self again. I guess I had about 50 flower from the few plants I have. Wonderful color and still in bloom. If you dont have a plant of this, get one.

Vandas have always been an interest to me. These crazy looking plants have some of the most colorful flowers. Bright and Bold. Easy to grow and bloom.

This is one of my new catts. I guess I have had it a few years. Lovely colors and hues. Easy to grow and long lasting. This one is Catt. Laura Bush

Once again the cymbidiums are starting to bloom. I guess I counted over 50 in spike so far. I am hoping to get close to 75 or so plants in spike. Several of them will have 3 or more spikes per plant. Last year was great, this year will be even better. Cymbidiums have to be the easiest orchids to grow and bloom.

Thats all for now. I will update as the flowers open. I have a few more flower buds that I have my eye on. Updates soon. Fall is here, and so are the orchids!

Rob, as usual you have outdone yourself. I can't decide which is prettier, the cattleya or the chartreuse-yellow. They are beautiful.

Your photos are beautiful as always. I can't believe how healthy your plants look.

My favorites are the first 3 photos. That bright magenta color with what looks like a red fall (not sure what that lagging lower flower petal is called on an orchid) is such a beautiful contrast in color and very appealing to me.

I also like the last photo the Cymbidium. It looks so delicate and feminine like.

I moved my orchids into my greenhouse and they are NOT looking too well. Some of the leaves are turning brown. I think they were in a bit too much sun. I've since moved them into a shadier location in my greenhouse and hope they recover.

Well i actually grow outside on a patio and inside on windowsill and in a case... i only really have room for minis. Right now it is something like 7% humidity... And outside or in, in southern california it can be pretty much the same. Construction is shoddier with the assumption of it being mild here, i would say that growing outdoors or in is pretty much the same... well, ok some really do use AC here. Because we live in the foothills we can get away without using AC as it's only really hot at home a few times a year, but this is the irony, even with just a few days of hot hot i have lost otherwise intermediate plants immediately, so thus I have to stick to warm/intermediate growers even though with bad insulation it can get to 50's/ 10C at night in winter, and isn't actually hot most of the year... though I've never lost a warm grower to cool temperatures. So considering the idea to grow for what's appropriate for climate it's pretty much a temp tolerant, dry growing orchid. yes, good luck to me. rupicolous laelias aren't exactly the everything orchid for me... nor dendrobium speciosum... ok i'll stop the complaining... lol Thanks for the tips on the plants, Jane... I'm curious about the aeranthes so i'll probably get one eventually... nepenthes can be tricky to adjust to form pitchers... sometimes just leaves for a while... but in general they come from mountain forests and need a temp drop at night, I'm thinking that's the issue. Some are higher altitude, others are low... highlands need low temps, and lows need uncomfortably high temps... but sill need the drop at night... there are so many hybrids now (for what market i have no idea) that many are unlabeled but if you know what it is it's easy to see if it's higher altitude and if it is, it probably isn't like the heat... one of the most common ones is nepenthes ventricosa which can sulk in heat just a bit, but is of the toughest of neps. Maybe you have that one... In general, when I grew in nyc, (I lived in astoria, Jane!), my biggest problem was not getting the lower temps... makes growing orchids a bit easier out here in the desert we call LA... but just a bit

Thank you Dax. This was about my third year in trying to propagate this J. virginiana. The first year I tried strong rooting hormone on cuttings, that failed. Second year I tried grafting with a knife (not razor sharp, just sharp) and doing the bag method except I did not let them breath, those all failed (quick), Spider mite infestation on the root stalks, and the knife not being razor sharp was likely the main causes for a quick death. Third year (this year) The scions seemed green for a long time in the humidity chamber after grafting, but I think that was just because the humidity preserved the chlorophyll even though the scions where getting little to no water uptake from the root stalk (guessing). The only ones to eventually grow a tiny bit and did not turn brown for the longest time, were the ones I had half in a jar of water (approach grafts), and they actually grew, but after I took the "graft" out of the humidity and removed the jar the tender new growth quickly shrived up and the last couple of scions I had died. I don't know if this guess is true or not, But I've been guessing (and hoping) the the only reason they failed is because I got the scions off the parent tree as the tree was coming out of dormancy in February (pollen cones on the tree where large and swollen, and just about to burst open). A very warm winter did not help either (breaking dormancy even earlier than typical.) So perhaps the scions did not have time to heal before the water started to transpire out of the foliage of the scions and juices flowing in the scions, thus a very poor graft union that was very susceptible to even tiny stresses in the aftercare (in other words: little to no water and nutrient uptake for the scions). Does this sound likely or not, (I don't mind if you disagree with what I said above, I want to learn as much as possible, so you can tell how you think about it). This time I want to get the scions in the dead of winter (in January). Do you think bagging the grafts could be better than the humidity chamber? Bagging them would be more work and I worry about spider mites, but I don't mind to do what ever it takes to get a successful cone of it, I'll do it. I would even spend hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars to graft/clone it successfully. lol You probably know how it is for me, ones favorite plant/tree of a plant enthusiast is kind of like a very close family pet.

You are starting to get powderly mildew. It came from the greenhouse and it's hard to get rid of. Try vinager and baking soda.

Hey Mark, thanks for the comments. From my side, its interesting to see what changes from year to year. Most of the same flowers bloom with sprinkles of new stuff here and there. Here is some new flowers this year. I love the colors that orchids have. The darker winter gets, the brighter the flower are.

This vanda above is a first time bloomer for me. I love vandas and they really like to show off. This burnt orange color has a bold statement for the fall.

I forget the name of this catt, but it has a wonderful color and smell. This flower will light up a greenhouse with its scent. Easy to grow.

Phragmipediums have always been interesting to me. This one has a beautiful red color with some yellow highlights.

This is what winter is all about. Anyone that knows me, knows I love cymbidiums. I have tons of these in spike that will bloom soon. I love these plants and the many flowers they grow. One day I hope to devote a whole greenhouse to the cymbidium. Just look at this yellow and dotted flower. This plant blooms 2 times a year. Its in bloom now and was in bloom back in the summer.

Wow! Your orchids are gorgeous!!! What sumptuous colors!!! I am building a greenhouse and hope to have it finished by January. Orchids are the primary reason along with vegetables and flowers for the gardens. I love the Vandas!

Hey Rob - Great to see you posting those beautiful orchid pictures again. I just love that bright Catt!

Hope your teaching is going great. I'm not even opening up our ghse this year as I went back to nursing at a state prison and just don't have the time or energy. I may regret letting those customers go, but.....

Okay you me sold I must buy some orchids. They really are pretty. I didnt know they have a scent to them. Very nice pictuers. I love the orange one it is a beuty...Barb

Hey Mary....teaching is going good. Can you believe how long its been. Time just flys.

More orchid pictures on the way. I am waiting for the blooms to open. I have some pretty stuff about to bloom. I love winter time, maybe we should call it orchid time.

Its a snowing in Alabama tonight, but the orchids are warm and cozy in the greenhouse. Here is whats blooming a few weeks from Christmas. I love these winter colors.

Hey Folks,
Its been a while since I updated this post as the winter has been busy with work and blooms. The orchids have done a wonderful job this year, blooming themselves off the chart.
