If what you're seeing is unusually bad, in an unusually bad year, it should clean up. If the roses upon which you're seeing the issues are new, they may or may not clean up with a weather change. You'll have to wait it out and see, presuming the weather get back to some semblance of "normal" there. Vick's Caprice went away here due to fungal issues. Mildew on Teas is legion right here, so I don't know what to tell you about that. Kim

I don't have a reference point, either. Some of them are fairly new roses I've had since about this time last year. A few others I got this summer. But we have truly had some strange weather up here in the Bay Area the last 6 weeks. It was 70 today. It'll get down to 40s tonight. And rain tomorrow. It'll probably be back in the 70s again by the weekend.

I suppose I can wait it out. For me the only other alternative is to evict them.

blackspot will kill the leaves and they will fall off. The plant will put out new leaves. The conditions that help blackspot thrive may change when it gets warmer and less moist. But the spores are always there, just waiting to come out.

Powdery mildew will likely clear up with the warmer drier weather. I have a lot of PM right now. I don't do anything for it. It doesn't kill the leaves like blackspot does.

Roses will get diseases in anomalous weather that they otherwise wouldn't. My 'Zephirine Drouhin' has had rust once, when we had five weeks of rain in late spring, the only time I've seen rust in my garden. It defoliated, leafed out again clean, and has been healthy ever since. You're just going to have to watch your roses over a period of a few years to get a feel for which ones get fungal sickness, how badly and under what conditions, and how much of it you're willing to put up with. A rose worth keeping is able to recover on its own--there may an occasional exception to that rule, but that is my experience.

In my experience, blackspot does not hurt roses. My Hybrid Perpetuals (and Reine Victoria) get blackspot but this does not diminish hardiness.

They re-leaf at their own pace; blackspot and leaf drop are part of their natural seasonal cycle.

I got Crimson Glory as a band, and neglected to see its reputation of mildew. Mildew annoys me more blackspot. Blackspots went away easily for me when I mulched roses with horse manure, including the ones in pots. Horse manure has lime, a fungicide.

I'll going to try dusting Crimson Glory with corn meal as an experiment. Frankly that looks better than mildew!

'Souv. de la Malmaison' mildewed here at record-setting levels (eclipsed only by Henri Martin). We tried 4 times. It mildewed so badly, it rarely opened.

Grandmother's Hat will blackspot for me when conditions are particularly bad, but gets over it when conditions change.

La Reine may rust for you later.

Reine des Violettes never suffered from fungal disease here -- it just had leaves that were ivory-white due to extreme chlorosis.

In Mediterranean climates, blackspot will stop spreading when it stops raining for the summer, but it will take a few weeks for the already-infected leaves to die and drop.

In this part of California, blackspot is a brief event, if it happens at all. Springs like this remind one why the Pernetianas, so wonderful here, never took the nation as a whole by storm. Even Westside Road Cream Tea, which never gets anything, has blackspot at the moment. But I have no doubt this will pass.

Mildew, on the other hand, can linger until fall. Some cultivars get afflicted regularly and badly all summer long; others only in the spring, then shrug it off once the weather is dry. Some will get it in the pot or the first few years in the ground, only to apparently become resistant to PM once mature and established (Madame Alfred Carriere, Jaune Desprez, and Crepuscule are some examples from my experience). Devoniensis was a total mildew magnet on the east side of the back yard but never got it once moved to the west side of the back yard (location, location, location). I don't spray; I either just tolerate a rose's foibles (for example, I know Mrs. B.R. Cant will always get some mildew early, but will improve later and her blossoms and scent are worth the relatively brief annoyance) or, if it's too much to bear, get rid of the rose.
