Just pruned & now frost, should I cover?

We have a frost coming this Monday night and I just pruned a bunch of roses.My roses are all well mulched but I am still worried since I just pruned. Should I cover them with sheets or will they be alright? I am sure this is not a hard freeze or I hope anyway. Any advice will be appreciated!

I'm in 7a, just checked the forecast & says low of 39; that and I don't believe a light frost would do that much damage.

You had me worried, just planted the majority of my rose order.

I'm watching this same frost warning too (and the tornado warning). I have only planted bareroots, not my pot rose order that is due to arrive this week so I'm glad my potted roses aren't in the ground already. I think I may need to cover my bareroots back up. They are really leafing out in a big way and I'd hate to hurt that new foliage! I'm going to haul my tender young mini's that I ordered in October and overwintered in the garage BACK into the garage. I'm almost more afraid they'll blow away in high winds than from the following frost threat.

It is too late now. The container azalea has begun the process of forming flower buds for Spring 2007. July is when they begin bud formation. If you prune now, it will be at the expense of getting flowers next year. I hope you get flowers next Spring! Luis

Should I prune ol' Nelly Moser now or just leave it?

Nelly Moser is a slow, slow grower for me.. I have had her 3 or maybe 4 years and she just can't make herself do much no matter how much i tend to her, she is watered and fertlized well but she is still a weak grower for me..In the years I have had her I might have seen a total of 5 very weak blooms. She was a mature plant when I got her at a plant swap. Grant it I do have her in a large 20 gal pot, but I have many in large pots and some of them aren't as old nor as mature as Nelly but they do grow and bloom well, but not Nelly Moser. As for pruning her now, I don't think it would help her this year nor hurt her in the long haul. Prunning above ground encourages root development below ground. I have found with mine she does best in part shade then in direct hot summer sun, she browns out very easy in hot sun. Sandy

What zone you are in? Are the plants dormant now? I'm not a sage expert but in general... When you move a plant, digging it up causes loss of root mass. This means the plant has a more difficult time taking up water. Frequently plants wilt under this condition. Relatively speaking, a small number of roots cannot take up enough water to support a large number of leaves. When this happens, it helps the plant by pruning it back after the move, equalizing root mass and leaf mass. I've done this before and the plant stopped wilting and recovered. The next year it was full and looked great. So based on that, it may actually be easier on the plants to move them now before there is a large number of leaves. You shouldn't have a problem with wilting. Just my opinion.

october and november are best months for copicing matilija poppies if the are well established. an annual cut back to the ground keeps beautiful and will usually increase flower production.

Thanks! I did not mean to worry anybody. I live in Albemarle & we are usually colder than everyone around us!

I am trying to recall which one of our rose persons said his/her roses that were covered (last Easter when we had the big chill in the Southeast) suffered more damage than the uncovered ones.

I did have damage but not as much as many people here; however, we were coming off a couple days of rain so the roses were quite wet and then we sprayed Wiltpruf. We lost the "spring show" but overall, the roses suffered very little long-lasting damage. In fact, I went on to have a rose show in April. Although there were "burnt" blooms, there was quite a bit of bloom.
