kgro power pro mower won't even crank

OK heres the story: I bought this riding mower a week ago, the owner claimed it worked great and nothing was wrong with it. I brought it home, mowed the lawn, it ran great. At the end however, I checked that the gas was low.

So I decided to put in gas but saw realized the gas I was putting in was really dirty and reddish in color. I guess the bottle had been siting outside and had rain water in it or something.

Anyway, I siphoned the dirty gas out of the tank, and made sure it was nice and clean. Than put in fresh new, clean gas.

It started up fine, but after running for 5 min it turned off and now it does not even crank. Did i ruin the engine?

Only if you put the gas into the engine instead of the gas tank!

On yours all you need to do is remove the entire airbox assy and you can run it easy enough to see a bit more to aid in troubleshooting. Yours won't have an accelerator pump. What you see is the fuel pump. Kohler does have sevice manuals online at no cost. When you change your fuel filter, "run" the line and catch some fuel in container so you can look for water and debris. Once that is done, run the line from the fuel pump into a container and crank the engine over to see if it is pumping a fair amount of fuel. Here is a link that might be useful: Kohler

Ok, mine will turn but only about an inch, then return to the original position as soon as i let off the key. Bypassed the control module and i cant even get it to move at all with the key. But as soon as i connect the bypass wire, it does that same one inch turn and releases as soon as i disconnect the wire fuel and oil are good, will get spark tester tool later but any ideas until then?

If the battery is more than 3 years old--buy a new one! Then, clean up all of the connections, such as ends of battery cables, and especially the ground wire where it bolts to ground, i.e.tractor frame, or body of tractor. Use new bolts, nuts, and lock washers to connect the new battery! This will make sure you have a good electrical connection in the starting circuit! there is also, usually, a fuse in the line somewhere. It will be one of those new style flat fuses, and easy to find. See if it has blown. You'll be able to tell easily. The little curved piece of metal in it should look to be in one piece. If it has blown, there will be a gap in it, and a burnt look. Also, the bolted connections to the starter solenoid are known to get corroded and cut off current to the starter solenoid! And, any battery cables with a green powder coming out of the covering are ripe for replacement. The seat switch wires should be connected, to avoid hurting anybody who might manage to tamper with the mower if you aren't on it! Especially little kids!

I've read on a commercial lawnmower forum that a lot of LCO's say if one of their employees shows up to a job with tennis type shoes, they send 'em home until they come back with steel (or composite) toe shoes/boots. I can personally recommend Timberland Pro Series low cut work boots. The are soooo light weight and comfortable, even with the steel toes my employee requires when we're out in the railroad environment.

Are you able to turn the engine by the top screen? Is the oil level overfull, or hard to read and smell of fuel?

OK, lets do the basic's, Check the oil? does it have oil in it? Y or N. battery is is connected and are the terminals clean and tight at both end? Y or N? Are we sticking the key all the WAY in before we turn it to the start position? Y or N. Is the Fuse Blown? Yes or No?

Remove the spark plugs and see if you can turn the engine over either by hand or using the starter? Turn or don't turn?

Just putting dirty gas into the tank is not going to prevent the engine from turning over, it will just plug up the filter between the gas tank and the engine. "O" does it have a fuel filter installed? yes or no? is it has a fuel filter most likely it stopped any big chunks that would plug the carb. up. But even it the carb. was plugged up the engine would turn over?

SO the big question is if the engine don't turn over it was not caused by the dirty gas. But likely the battery went dead? (have it load tested for free at autozone). The connections are dirty or loose or fell off not making a connection from the battery through the ign switch through the solonid through the starter to crank the engine. Or the bigger question you ran it really low on oil and it locked up which had nothing to do the with dirty gas you installed in the engine. there is probably about 20 more questions I frogot or other possibliities causing it not to turn over meaning the engine don't turn and you get NO CLICK? right?

i'm able to spin the engine by hand so atleast its not seized up

ok so I took the battery to a shop yesterday and sure enough it was dead, the guy said they can't even charge it. i get home and put the new battery in and try to start

except this time, I heard a whirling sound (the engine still was not cranking) I looked more closely and saw that the gear on the starter bendix was spinning (indicating the starter is working) but the gear was not going high enough to engage with the engine flywheel and make it spin

anyway, that was yesterday, today i took apart the starter to try to clean the bendix and put it back on

and now it won't do anything at all, no cranking, no whirling sound or reaction at all

I think i'm covering all the safety features (sitting on seat, gear in neutral, blade is turned off) and is also on choke

SO WHAT NOW?

First, make sure you have the battery connected correctly. OTW, take the "new" battery out and to a qualified shop that can LOAD test it. While the battery is out, take apart and clean all starting circuit connections with emory/sandpaper to bare bright metal. Include chassis connections and both battery posts/connectors.
Re-install known good battery. If starter pinion still does not spin up and turn over engine, re-post here - based on what you report, we should be able to help you further.

ok i'll do that asap, another thing about the old battery, red wire was attached to the "-" minus/negative terminal, and the black was attached to the positive/+ terminal, seeing that, thats how installed the new battery

but now i come to think of it, isnt it supposed to be the other way around? the red goes on + and black goes on -?

As a rule, yes - black-neg, red-pos. But, first confirm your red wire goes to from it's battery post to chassis ground.
Sometimes electrical circuits become "personalized" over the years.... and some batteries have their posts reversed as manufactured.

well the black seems to be attached to the chassis and the red goes to solenoid and then to starter

My mistake - yeah, black wire should go to ground (the chassis). BUT, the black wire also needs to be hooked to the battery's negative (-)post. If that's so, yer good on that end.

ok so I took the battery to get it checked out, and i was told theres like 2 volts on lol so I have to get it recharged.
The guy said that something in the mower drained the battery like the starter may be bad, or ignition or something.

I was wondering, if u hook up a batter the wrong way, can that drain it? (like red goin to - and vice versa?)
