roses are outside now!

Well, I was either brave or stupid, but I brought out my 36 roses in pots. The weather is around 12C (53.6F). That's just perfect to bring them out. But, the nights go down to -2C (28.2F). And we always get snow in May. So my husband and I went to Fabricland and bought some thickish fabric (sort of like courdoroy). We bought 18 meters (60 feet) of very wide fabric. It takes two lengths - that's why we needed 18 meters. So that goes on every night. Then if it snows, we'll also cover them with a tarp. So I think I've got it covered (pun intended).

Thanks Jim - I feel so light and happy now that the rose season has begun! Yippee!!!

Absolutely do NOT keep them inside over the winter. Plant them now and mulch them well. I make a cylinder of chicken wire to go around my more tender roses and new plants, then mound them with a bit of compost and fill the cage with leaves. Works wonderfully! You don't want to mulch like this until the ground starts chilling down considerably however, as in this weather they will cook. In spring just as it's starting to think about thawing remove the cage but leave the leaves. Remove them layer by layer as thawing occurs and the weather warms so you don't shock your rose. -Marie

Hey Laura,thank you! I hated SO MUCH to break down the plastic sheeting over the rods I made as a temporary greenhouse almost like a hoop one made of P.C pipes...The sun would create heat in that green house and send all the fragrance of the flowers into the open door to that tent right into my home every day...Like hot air filling my house with sweet smells. I will, miss that. The worst part as Sammers said was bringing them in. I don't worry about them outside even when it's cold, but I worry about the inside with no bright open skies....Ugh Calamondindave, I thank you so much. It is just like that! I will miss it for sure. I HATE winter! I was thinking, why don't you make like a hoop greenhouse from P.V pipes like I did right up against the warm side of your home? You made never have to bring them inside even in cold nights..Just use a little space heater!

This IS the season for rust. I removed RdR from my Newhall garden many years ago because of its proclivity to rust. Many of the Portland, Damask Perpetual, etc. class can more easily rust, so where that's an issue, be forewarned. Rust is a geriatric disease, attacking old foliage. What you have on your plant is very likely the foliage left over from last summer, so it's "geriatric". If you remove the old foliage, very likely new, healthy foliage will replace it and should remain as healthy as you found it to be most of last year. Something I've observed with roses prone to rust is water stress can force them to rust. I would check to see if the pot might need more soil and perhaps repotting into a large pot. Many roses I've had rust issues with improved when I paid better attention to how much water they received to make sure they got enough and making sure they weren't too root bound, which can easily lead to water stress. If you have the energy and time, spraying with the hort oil/soap after removing the rusty leaves should also help to smother the spores and any insect eggs waiting for "spring" growth.

Yes it got up to 16C (61F) today!! It's gorgeous outside. I have to prune my roses soon.

I doubt if snow would hurt them. It's getting late enough in the season where low temps won't stay very long...

Yes, Jim, it was a very expensive lesson. But I did learn. :)

I like hearing that a little bit of snow (they'll be covered) won't hurt them. I was a little leery about that.
