shredded paper in bags - overwintering

Well, I am sold on this method!!!

I don't remember whose idea (thank you VERY much) it was to put shredded newspaper into bags (I used any type of small bag - grocery bags, etc). I put no other protection on my roses except maybe 4 bags around each rose. Then I made sure to shovel snow on the roses once or twice over winter.

My roses have never had such length to their green canes. There is NO canker! For example, my Golden Celebration has 1 1/2 feet of green viable canes!!! Usually I get about an inch!! I'm in zone 3a and I've got 1 1/2 feet of green canes on a tender rose!!!

Now, I'm using the shredded paper for my composting. I'm so happy!!! :)
