Window-mounted greenhouse

Hi

I live in MD - Zone 6b. I built a very small "hoop house" - 2'x4' for my "curry leaf plants" to get through the winter, but it doesn't look like it is going to maintain temp without a heater to protect my plants. So i was trying to see if i can find a small greenhouse that i can attach to my window - that way i can prop open the window at night to let the greenhouse be heated through the system in the house. I tried googling "window mounted greenhouse". I found a lot of articles that talk about these window-mounted greenhouses, but can't find any place that would sell one. Any help is much appreciated! Either in locating a place where i may be able to buy one, or ideas on how to go about building one. I am trying to avoid bringing the plants indoor if at all possible since i have a 1-year old who is bound to get to it whereever i keep it :).

Hi vivasayi! (Does this name mean: "long-live say I"?
(viva is Spanish for "long live")

In looking on the internet re: window-mounted greenhouse, you might look for "bay window". Those are the ones that make a half-circle curve outside the exterior of the house.

Just a thought.

How appropriate that I saw this came back up when my DH was making some repairs to the greenhouse. The lower window of the door fell apart and just today we bought cedar shingles to cover the plywood at the gable peaks. I'll throw some paint on it and we'll be ready to go for another year. From Chick coop I accidentally put this picture in the wrong folder. If you want to work backwards you can see our latest trash to treasure project, the chicken house / garden shed. So we just started building our second glass house. If you search under my user name you can find pics of the first one. We moved even before we got to finish that one so the new owner got a great perk with the house :) Got the foundation and floor in this weekend (now have to run down and get the building permit!) and am waiting on Home Depot for 2 16 foot beams I need for the top sides. This one will be 12 x 16 with 10 foot high walls and and an 8 foot ceiling peak. The first greenhouse was 8 x 12 with 8 foot walls and a ceiling height dictated by the windows I had. This new one will have a metal roof so we will have a much steeper pitch. I went to pick up some windows from a lady on Craigslist and she also threw in these 2 great old french doors - really narrow and tall. They will be the focal point of the building. Can't wait to get the walls up. It's like putting a puzzle together. Someone on my facebook page said:" You know you can build a pvc hoop and plastic greenhouse for about $250." I said it wasn't really going to be used as a greenhouse and I wanted something a lot nicer looking than that for my glass garden house. It has to fit in with my 1780 colonial.

ML What a wonderful collection of pretty spaces. I KNOW which one LL will love. Oldgardener that is a delightful little shed? Shed is that really enough of a name for such a pretty little building. My DH built me the garden shed from satellite dish fins and some recycled tin. Not a thing of beauty but is really is useful. Since the french doors our friend brought up will not fit where we had hoped I am going to try to use them some how on the front porch. First I need to get them to the porch. They will take two men and a woman to lift them. EEEEKKK they are heavy. I do not plan on officially mounting them . Just have them temp until I can talk DH into enclosing half or so of the porch. I really hope to do that some day. THEN we can use the collected windows and doors I have been hoarding.

Ah - a different interpretation for viva-say-i. The word actually means "farmer" in Tamil - my native tongue.

MollyD - thanks for the links. All those look great - not exactly what i had in mind.

What i had in mind was a small greenhouse that i could somehow mount on the outside, preferably something that i can take down once the winter goes by. I have a double-hung window that's 32" wide x 64" tall.
The way i am thinking about this, during really cold nights, i could just raise the lower window and voila - the greenhouse will be heated - the screen on the window will prevent the critters that hang-out in the greenhouse from entering the house (keeps the wife happy that way)
During the day or warmer nights, i can keep the window closed.

I am quite sure this is not the first time someone has thought of this. Please share your experiences...
