What should I put here?

I posted this picture on the regular forum because I was thinking about putting Carefree Beauty or Carefree Wonder here, but now I'm not sure. I currently have Fame! planted behind the fountain, but it looks like it's dying and if it does, I want to replace it with something healthier. It doesn't have to be an antique, but I don't want to spray it and it needs to be a pretty shaped bush, so that's why I'm leaning towards an antique. It doesn't look like it, but there's about 3 1/2 to 4 feet between the fountain and birdhouse. I also don't want to go with a light colored roses because the thrips are terrible here. Deep pinks are my favorite, but red would be okay also as long as it doesn't fry too easily in the heat.

very nice yard you got there laurie - i think some yellow roses like Graham Thomas will contrast well with that pink rose. Don't forget to include some foxtail, and other pernnials like delpheniums, and some daffodils.

Laurie, just a note. At a recent symposium I was told that single blooms don't have thrips. The 'expert' said that the thrips didn't have a place to hide.
Monsieur Tillier is a great tea of a darker pink and has never had thrips damage. The polyantha Marie Daly is a great rose and is about 4 1/2 feet tall in its third year and will get larger if I let it. Lafter, Radiance and Red Radiance are older hybrid teas that are extremely disease resistant and drought tolerant for me but will get 9 feet tall if you let them. I imagine they could be kept much shorter if you wanted. I've never noticed thrips on these and they're all very fragrant.

IMO there is not a reason for a bookcase in that spotit will just add clutter to nice space I would however hang drapes on those windows for sure . Empty spaces are also needed in design ,

Do you have collectibles? What is the style/theme of your home? If in a warmer climate, mosaic tile would be nice. You could also put a wall paper mural in the nook. Would better be able to help if had additional pics of home.

If you don’t need a place to set a coffee mug/ book/etc on a side table there, I’d do a floor lamp. If you’d like a place to set a drink or something while sitting there, I’d go for a complimentary table with a table lamp. Agreed with others, it does not need to match the coffee table, in fact - I personally find I like rooms that aren’t perfectly matched the best!! Something black/wood that compliments the coffee table would be perfect! (In my phone so I can’t see it now- but someone posted a table that doesn’t have the four legs- it kind of hangs off one side - I LOVE that one for your space!!)

I also wouldn’t plant right up against the house , or you’ll be pruning and working to prevent poor air circulation and mildew. So I’d bring any plantings out further and have a rudimentary maintenance- type pathway behind. If you are a wildlife lover then planning a bird feeder that can be seen from deck would be fun. If worried about the feeder attracting unwanted varmints right by the house ( it happens; & we bring our feeder in at night), you could plant more of a pollinator garden, then mix in some smaller evergreens ( dwarf types) — these could be broad- leafed if in partial shade, vs conifers, but with a few perennial flowers and room for a largish container for annuals. Depends on access to water for maintenance also.

I've been admiring pictures of Monsier Tillier for quite a while, but doesn't it get pretty big? I'm going to check out your other suggestions also. Thanks!

I just bought Carefree Wonder and it is definitely an eye catching rose. I have Graham Thomas as well and love him, but he does get a little tall.

Make sure your bed has a little height to ensure good drainage.

garden_party - When you say CW is an eye catching rose, what is it that makes it so? Is it the color or the number of blooms, etc?

Laurie, I hate to be negative but CW was a black spot nightmare even with spraying. It is a beautiful rose.
Monsieur Tillier can be a large rose as are all the teas. You already have Gruss an Aachen and Pink Gruss don't you. They're some of the smaller roses that I'm familiar with and I can't recall the thrips hitting them very hard, but again I sprayed. I can't think of another pink that fits your bill but a good red is Dame de Coeur. Another great rose, one of my favorites but not pink, is Perle d'Or.

Thanks, Hamp. I just realized I was getting Carefree Wonder mixed up with Carefree Beauty again. I just got Pink Gruss this year and I'm a little worried because my first two blooms have had brown edges, so I don't know yet if its thrip damage or just this crazy weather. I'll check out Dame de Coeur.

Laurie, all my pink roses, Gruss and Pink Gruss included, have the dark edges and I think it's the weird weather, the late cold snap.

Laurie, what a pretty garden! Love the bench, too.

If you are deciding between Carefree Wonder and Carefree Beauty , please side with Beauty. This is a Buck rose, medium pink, and has a nice fragrance. I avoided Buck's roses for years, since they were specifically bred to withstand harsh prairie winters. I thought they would languish in my heat and humidity. WRONG! They do beautifully!

As for a red red rose, if you are willing to try a Hybrid Perpetual (fairly tall), I can recommend Henry Nevard without hesitation. It seems to love the heat, and the foliage is very disease resistant. Mine last five days in a vase.
