Your best be is Ramblin' Red. It has Henry Kelsey as a parent but better bloom form. There is no fragrance. Others to consider are Prairie Princess and Awakening. Here is a webpage with additional suggestions:

I suggest you invest in the book "Roses for Dummies." I am not suggesting that you are a dummie, but even after growing them for 30+ years, I find this book most helpful. Also, remember that whatever you plant should not be pruned until after that first flush of bloom in spring. You don't prune climbrs/ramblers as you would a hybrid tea. The book can be had from Amazon or Barnes and Noble on line.

John Cabot may bloom the first year, but not very much. It blooms mostly in the spring. It is a very vigorous rose and hardy to the tips so give it plenty of room. If you want other options, check out the new climbers from Bill Radler (he hybridized the Knock Out rose). His climbers are Ramblin' Red, Brite Eyes, and two new ones - Morning Magic and Winner's Circle. Ramblin' Red and Brite Eyes are supposed to be hardy, but I haven't seen anyone try the two new ones yet. I have John Cabot myself, and I've ordered Quadra and Chianti for this spring. Quadra should be hardy, Chianti is a little iffy and a once bloomer, but I loved the color so I'm trying it anyway.

Something to keep in mind, it will take years to grow the desired rose bush you want to form a privacy fence.

There is an old saying I heard about climbing roses years ago... they sleep, creap, then leap. What this means is that the first year after you've planted them, they will seem to sleep. Basically, there will be very little growth. The second year, they will creap. The will slowly grow larger and larger, but they won't be too big. Finally, after spending two years growing a good set of roots, the third year they will leap into a huge rose bush.

Former Buckeye (Ohio) here, near the boundary of Z5/6. You might include some Griffith Buck shrub roses, many of which would be cane-hardy for you and are tall enough to cover large portions of fence. They don't require the training of climbers; actually you could alternate shrubs & climbers. As a class, most rugosas would be hardy and are BIG! There are some glorious Kordes shrubs that can be used as climbers-- check out Sparrieshoop and Weiss aus Sparrieshoop on helpmefind.com/roses.

When you mention Kordes and climber, I have to put in my two cents on Kiss of Desire. It's slept the first year and crept up the trellis last year, but this year it's over the top of the trellis and running down the side of the deck covered in buds. I think it's a beauty! A most wonderful shade of pink with a white reverse. Like the poem that described the perfect bride's rose as a white for purity with a kiss of red edging for passion, this one is kissed with that gorgeous shade of pink. Smells good too.
Another one I'm using in place of a climber, even though it's not, is Graham Thomas. It's a big old boy with long strong canes and generous bloomer. He's on my fence growing for privacy and he's been blooming nicely since his second year. This year, he's covered in buds already, can't wait. He's a delicious shade of yellow with a marvelous fragrance.

I'm sorry, but none of these make really good climbers for a true zone 4, unless you have a special sheltered yard . Even zone 5-ers can't imagine the difference in cane hardiness stepping down just that one more zone number.

Ramblin' Red - wonderful red reblooming rose: not cane hardy in zone 4...and unfortunately neither are the other new roses by Bill Radler according to all reports.

Dortmund - (the Kordes rose that Mikeber suggests) very pretty single flower with leaves that are shiny like holly: not cane hardy in zone 4.

Prairie Princess...not a climber in zone 4, just a small shrub (because its canes are not winter hardy.)

Awakening - beautiful rose, just not cane hardy in zone 4.

Really, I've wasted years trying these 'almost' hardy climbers. If you plan on making a privacy screen out of that chain link fence, you need the hardiest roses you can find. That is the Canadian bred roses, no doubt about it. William Baffin, William Booth, John Davis, John Cabot, Henry Kelsey, Capt. Samuel Holland, Quadra, Alexander Mackenzie and the like - you can't go wrong with any of these. The suggestion of a large shrub is a good one as well opening the way for many, many cane hardy roses to choose from: rugosas, albas, gallicas, and large roses in the "shrub" class like Applejack, Marie Victorin, Wanderin' Wind to name a few.

The best advice I can give you (unless you want to start your roses over and over each spring) is to be sure to look for roses that are **cane** hardy to zone 4 or lower, not just 'crown' hardy (which means that they will survive but have to re-grow.)

The truth is that in zone 4 it's be easier to specialise in covering a bank with ground-cover or procumbent roses. It's very hard work to take all the dead wood out of a climber that has died way back. The best response often comes from someone in YOUR zone-- AnneCecilia. Those Canadian Explorer roses exist to address the problem of growing a showy climber in northern climes. One of my faves is a bright-red shrub, Champlain. Don't know if it's as hardy as the ones Anne Cecilia suggested...I was born in Mich. but never grew roses up there!

I totally agree with AnneCecelia. I've grown some of the varieties mentioned and unfortunately, they haven't been cane hardy for me. They usually end up with so much winter dieback that I have to cut them down really hard and of course, they have to start all over. I've had good luck with: William Baffin, John Davis, John Cabot and Quadra. Ramblin' Red wasn't hardy for me either. I love this rose though and bought another one. I'm trying it in a sheltered spot this year, so hopefully it will survive our harsh winters. Also, the Kordes climbers have not been cane hardy for me and instead of being climbers, are basically short shrubs. They are very disease resistant and beautiful, though.

I've never heard of William Booth. What color is it and where can I buy it - assuming I like it!

William Booth is a medium red with a pink reverse - described as an American Pillar-looking rose that is hardy to zone 2. Mine's from Great Lakes Roses - they don't ship, but if you can drive there from where ever you are in Illinois, it would be worth it. This is their last year, as the Lindley's are retiring in the fall. According to HelpMeFind, other than GLR and Sam Kedeem (who I don't think ships anymore either) the only nursery selling William Booth is Hortico. That's kind of a chancy thing according to most folks but I must say that I got my Felix Leclerc from Hortico this spring and I was satisfied with their product.

Thanks for the info. I've never ordered from Hortico and I'm a little hesitant to do so given the negative feedback they get on the forum.

I'm curious, what climbers do you grow? Also, have you ever ordered from Palatine nursery in Canada.
