Comments (19)Deciduous choices: 1. A small native tree, cercis occidentalis (Western redbud). Gets to about 15 feet. Usually grows as a multi-trunk. Usually blooms better inland where it gets colder. Attracts hummingbirds. Doesn't bloom heavily near the coast where I live. Rounded shape and leaves. Well-behaved rootwise. Mine is 5 feet from our pool. 2. Chaste tree (vitex agnus-castus). Great, reliable summer bloomer, even near the coast. Attracts hummers and butterflies. Roots well behaved--ours is also 5 feet from the pool like our cercis occidentalis. To about 15 feet. We've grown ours as a multi-trunk. Some people like to keep the tree trimmed as a large shrub. (You can see a small portion of the Western redbud in the foreground to the left.) 3. Forest pansy redbud (cercis canadensis). This one blooms better (at least in my location) than my native redbud....See MoreSmall tree, grows in southern california coastal. What is it?

Comments (7)I have a trident planted about 20 years from a mail order gallon. It is about 25' by 20'. I've left it branched to the ground, but will probably do some limbing soon, as it is cumbersome to mow beneath it. It has started exfoliating in the past several years and I want to highlight that. Foliage begins turning in late Oct and slowly changes into Nov. Interestingly with the lowering sun angle the south side turns shades of red-maroon-orange-copper and the north side turns yellow. It is fully open grown, sun from sunrise to sunset. It is compact but not overly dense. I assume it is seed grown. I consider it an ornamental-architectural tree rather than a shade tree. It is growing much slower than local red maple ecotypes, and three local sugar maple ecotypes about 100' away are growing faster. I consider it a very attractive and desireable tree, YMMV. I'm in TN....See MoreEmbothrium
