Comments (19)Last year I planted Madame Alfred Carriere on a fence along the driveway which has sun all day. She didn't do so well the first year and didn't produce many blooms, but has suddenly taken off this year. Not many thorns and nice bendy canes. Grows like crazy, from what I can see this year. There are tons of flower buds right now and I like that she starts flowering from close to the base. The blooms are beautifully romantic - a soft white blush pink which goes with most things and the fragrance is really lovely. They don't last that long indoors, but from my experience so far MAC seems like a healthy, vigorous, sweet smelling rose....See Morethornless climber, shade tolerant Z5 ?
Comments (12)Thank you all for the info. Kate I have a 10 year old Buff Beauty engulfing my screened in porch on the back of the house. She is pretty thorny but lovely. Chirstopher I will check out the Zephy sports. So far I am thinking Zephy will be the one. I did some heavy pruning this morning. It is too soon to tell but I may have lost 4 roses to the harsh winter. If I wait to see what roses I have to replace to put in the order for the Zephy I fear it may be late to be sure I get one. I usually order from Heirloom roses. This is the first time I have feared the loss of any rose in my garden. I always get own root and don't zone push. It was wicked. We had snow coverage but there were so many days of below 10 degrees with high winds. Will check back for any late answers to the post....See MoreCutting garden in z5
Comments (17)I'm not sure what your situation is, but where my parents live in the midwest (also zone 5) they have a ton of Japanese beetles. Those insects LOVE roses. It might be worth trying some hardy, once-blooming, old-fashioned roses (gallicas, for example) to see if you can get your roses to bloom and be done by the time the beetles show up. Some of the super hardy gallicas will do fine without winter protection (so many other roses in zone 5 will die without a rose cone, or at least some mulch piled over them for the winter). If you want suggestions of once-blooming, hardy old roses for cutting, post a message on the antique rose board. You mention your yard being quite wet -- that could make growing roses difficult. You may need to do something to improve the drainage for them, because they don't like to sit in water. I would also suggest finding a spot in your yard for a lilac and some hydrangeas. They won't bloom constantly, but they are nice for cutting....See MoreRose suggested for west side of my house
Comments (8)I live in South Florida ... it is hot and humid here. When I started my roses, I put in a couple of plants at my office, because I spent more time there than at my home..... I did NOT know who to plant or what to plant. I just knew I wanted roses..... So I built a raised bed right on top of asphalt on the west side and right next to the all white building. I did not know about draining.... I did not know that roses liked morning sun.... I did not know much about anything..... but I did plant a few roses there.... my best bloomer is Medallion.... it actually does quite well there despite all of wrong things I threw at it..... in fact it does better than many of the ones planted in much better circumstances at my home....See More- 11 years ago
