If all the canes are dead the rose is a goner--perhaps you could get a new basal out of it, but you could just get sprouting rootstock. Or nothing at all. If there is some green left you could cut off all the black parts down to healthy tissue and see what happens. Canker can be spread by using secateurs on an infected plant and then using the same tool on an uninfected one. Disinfect the blades with Listerine after working on infected plants.

Roses that didn’t make it here at the old place (that I can remember off the top of my head): Dames de Chenonceau; Versigny; Francois Blaise (sp?); Condesa de Sastago; Lady Emma Hamilton; and a couple others that I’d need to see the list to name. They have transplanted 100+ of our old collection to the new place already. It’s going to be a much smaller garden, because of water concerns. I was amazed at how some of the bigger teas (really huge plants) survived essentially being “bare rooted“ and just started shooting out growth from thick, old wood the second they were in the ground at the new place: Niles Cochet; Mons. Tillier; Mme. Antoine Mari; Old Town Novato; Clementina Carbonieri; Rosette Delizy and many others I can’t recall. Now, if we can only keep the deer pressure off of them. We have been spraying deer repellent regularly, and it remains to be seen if that’ll help

If you don't mind once-bloomers, I'd go for albas, albas, albas. Their foliage is so beautiful, and most set hips once they mature. I love their large, arching growth. Alba Maxima, Blanche de Beligique (few hips on this one), and Great Maiden's Blush are our best. Pompom Blanc Parfait's flowers are too small for the size of the plant. Celestial has not thrived for us. In bloom, no rose is more refined and fragrant. I'm also crazy about eglantine, which has wonderful hips, great apple scent in the foliage, sweet pink flowers in spring, and a great set of backstories. I can talk for ten minutes about this rose on our tours, and sometimes do. Damasks may not be disease-resistant for you, but in my dream line-up of big shrubs, I'd have to have one Autumn Damask and just accept its sparse, lanky growth. Judicious pruning would help, I'm sure. We grow a mossed, white sport - Quatre Saisson Blanc Mousseux - that is really gorgeous. Many of the Hybrid Musks will grow to big arching shrubs - Lyda Rose is terrific, but we also grow Pax, Penelope, Buff Beauty and others in big mounds. Another terrific rose that can get big is Blush Noisette. Again, it's more of a mound than a free-standing shrub. Yes, many of the teas, at least here in California, will build and build into 8 feet or higher piles of constant bloom. We have a White Maman Cochet that is simply fabulous. I don't know how big they'll get for you. I wouldn't in good conscience recommend Mermaid, although I'll bet that Jeri's sighting of that one was indeed remarkable. I can't imagine dealing with its armature. Would Susan Louise be hardy enough for your climate? I've often thought about putting it at the back of my border. It's a bit gawky, but reblooms well with the most astonishing large, pointed buds. There are so many choices. I envy you and Sammy for making plans to plant. I'm SPing and adding a few roses at a time at home and in the cemetery, not nearly so much fun! Anita

I did a lot of research before purchasing my CornueFe 110 for my new home four years ago. I considered the Lacanche Cluny, but ultimately chose the CornueFe. As far às for performance goes, it is a dream to cook with, and a tool that I use almost daily. The styling is beautiful and the overall construction can best be described as "solid" - especially compared to some of the other ranges mentioned in this discussion. I've had a couple of service issues, but all were handled quickly by PM. All of the ignition switches were not functional when it was installed. They had new switches flown in from France and reinstalled within two days. After about a year, the switches went out again. They sent a service repairman right away to replace them. He reinstalled the switches, only to have them fail upon testing. He took off the back panel and discovered a wire that wàs improperly routed over a rough metal piece, causing it to fray and arc. He was able to change the wire and run it through a protective sleeve. While I was disappointed that this was not caught by Quality Control at the factory, I can't say enough positive things about the service techs employed by PM. All in all, I can heartily recommend this as a quality range. The ovens are more than adequate and I love the side-swing configuration. The simmer burner is still a little too hot on the lowest setting, but that is easily overcome with a simmer plate or diffuser. I had 18 family members for Thanksgiving dinner and cooked the entire meal on it without a problem. The 20# Turkey came out perfectly browned and very moist in exactly 2 hours - no turning or basting! Good luck with your choice!
