the model# tag is obliterated. It has a 24" augur. Its got an HM60 Tecumseh. There is NO plastic anywhere on it. Only 1 drive belt. The augur + fan is hooked up with a dog clutch. There are levers for the drive idler pully and the dog clutch beside the engine.

It took less than 1/2 hr to get it running. All I did was to remove the main jet and clean out the the tiny hole on its side with a wire brush bristle. Once I got it running, I ran it around a bit. every thing works well. Now that I have 2 runners , it willl prolly never snow in my neck of the woods again.

Sounds similar to mine which is about 20 years old.

I have the two levers as you describe, but I have a plastic belt guard (may not be original). One belt, same dog clutch, I have an HM80 engine. Mine is a 1974 model.
I have others that are older, but not yet running.
You always seem to find some great machines. I wish I had a dump to visit. My wife is very happy we don't.

it is side play, end play is good. I just pulled the gear box and impeller out of the housing. The impeller shaft snapped at the roll pin closest to to the gear box. that may account for the sideplay in the bearing. So now I have a balky carb on another 24 " Ariens of unknown vintage that works fine otherwise. I think a needle and seat will fix that. It has a single belt setup with a dog clutch to engage the blower. It doesnt look like a straight swap. I guess I'm gonna be hunting for Ariens parts.

I think your going to have to remove the cover on the bottom and see whats going on. It sounds like your drive system is not releasing or is incorrectly adjusted which would explain why it is hard to push forward. The diff lock would not hinder you pushing it forward. Its basically a pin that locks the wheel so both wheels power the blower. If you pull the black knob out and turn it so it does not seat back in, only one wheel with spin and it will be much much easier to turn. If you want both wheels to drive the blower which makes it much harder to turn, turn the knob until it falls back in. It seems like you'll need to adjsut the drive system. Your friction wheel could also be worn and the system was adjusted to compensate for that.

$500, Expensive? Actually it depends on the way you look at it. When we were living in Indianapolis it cost about $100 each time it snowed to clear my drive way. 5 snows and you have the cost of the snow blower. The second way of looking at it, if you are currently manually shoveling the drive, is the potential cost. If you have a medical emergency while shoveling snow, I our area the cost of transportation to the Hospital is about $130. Cost of an overnight stay in the hospital from the emergency room starts at about $5000. So looking at it this way a $500 snow blower is a bargain

I too have an Ariens Snow Thrower with a Tecumseh engine. I am a mechanical schmuck -- my father was an aircraft mechanic and I picked up more than a few things from him in the past but by no means am I an expert when it comes to these little engines. I have a kid that is a highly trained motorcycle repairman. I have a brother who used to service Hueys. My snow thrower ran like a top for 2-3 years -- no problems. Two years ago it started to surge -- this problem progressively got a bit worse. My snow thrower use has been quite limited all things considered. My first thought was the carburetor. My son and I disassembled the cowlings and detached the carb. Suffice to say it all looked like it was new. (it should have looked like new -- probably operated less than 20-30 times total). Ian rebuilt the carburetor. New gaskets/seals. Net effect: Nothing changed -- nothing at all. My brother suggested running straight sea foam (higher octane) -- this too failed to improve things a bit. Then my brother suggested we spray gas (with a spritzer) on various areas on the assembly while the engine was running -- if the surging stopped, that would suggest there was an air leak. I told him he was certifiable -- spray gas on a hot manifold??? Well after much argument, we sprayed carb cleaner as previously suggested with the engine running and low and behold, the problem resolved -- temporarily. Spraying the front of the carburetor seemed to get the best results. So it appears the problem is an air leak. Why would an air leak manifest over three years after purchase? An air leak will make an engine run lean. Wonderful! Now I have one more issue to resolve. Where the heck is the air leak? (bangs head on the desk). Nope, I cannot identify this new phantom. Sorry, I didn't solve your problem here but this is a real issue, it is not the choke, the carb, the old gas, or many other of the well intentioned suggestions. It is likely caused by an air leak. Now if anyone can tell me how to identify this air leak I would be most appreciative and I suspect others might benefit from information of that nature as well. I got a bad feeling that I will have to replace the entire carburetor -- just bet this is a manufacturing defect. mjc

I have 5 of them! 4 run, 1 doesn't! Had 3 inches of snow last winter, and a neighbor brought up his Wheel Horse tractor, and cleared both driveways before i got out of bed!
RATS! Can't sell them, can't give them away--not enough snow to use them! did sell one last year because i needed the storage room, but got another two donated to me!

The town pays big bucks to haul rubbish to a transfer station. Anything that can be recycled helps the cause. I am selective now, I go for Ariens or Toros. The older the better. From hanging out here for awhile, I learned the trick about the main jet on the Tecumseh carbs. The build quality on the old stuff is so much ruggeder than the stuff I see at the big stores. this old beast was either well cared for or very seldom used. Every bushing is good. It has a flat tire, but I have a good set from the Bolens that I grabbed for its factory short block HM70 last winter.

If I got my hands on that Ariens, it would be headed for a full restore. Does the Ariens have a differential drive?

Rusty...last year was a dud. Get ready for the snowstorm of a century...we are due.

. I havent gotten far enough into it to look at the drive. The 77 924 I have has a locking drive differential. But its not an automotive type of diff. At twilight, I uncovered it and started it on the 2nd pull. Its popping back through the exhaust just a bit. Hopefullly running a heavy dose of Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel will help that.

Yeah, i have an old Dayton that doesn't run, and an almost new 5 h.p. blower, auger propelled, electric start, that does. Maybe i can put the electric start engine on the Dayton. They look the same as for the mounting, etc.
and, i rec'd an electric start, smaller snow blower, that runs and drives. Found it in the garbage, at the curb, owner helped me load it! then our church gave me another one, for getting their mower back in operation! And, of course, only 3 inches of snow! And the neighbor! Aww, he meant well, just ruined my "fun"!

I swear by these machines. I have one that just threw a rod after 30 years and I just bought another old one today. I will get this one running and then buy a new motor for my other. I love these machines so much I may restore one with new paint and factory decals someday. Great machines!
