Chain could be too loose if it spins at idle. I would remove the jets (note the number of turns) blow them out with carb. cleaner. If it will excellerate with choking it I would choke it and get the highest rpm out of it to run some gasmix through it and see if it clears up. If not I would try to adjust the high speed screw counter clockwise to richen up the mix and see if that helps.

That grey smoke was probably the clutch if the chain was jammed as you tried to rev it. Is it only hard starting when cold? The cold start procedure is to pull the choke, this turns the switch on, sets the choke and high idle. Pull the rope until you hear it burp and quit. Push the choke in without touching the throttle and pull again. When it starts, bump the throttle to return to normal idle. I like to pull the choke then push it in before starting warm too, starts a little easier on high idle.

Maybe adjust the chain tension. First of all, there shouldn't be any sawdust. Your chain should be cutting out small wood chips. Normally, the appearance of dust means the chain is very dull. I'm actually wondering if you might have the chain installed wrong. Read the ECHO manual to see if your saw has an adjustment for the chain oiling rate. I had to cut through some fairly gummy pine, so I adjusted the oiling rate on my Stihl fairly high to "throw off" any pine gum that might want to become involved with my chain. As long as you don't run your oil tank dry before you run your gas tank dry (I rarely do that), it should be "safe" to increase your oiling rate. When you rev your engine, you should see a visible spray of oil slinging off the end of your bar. That's my thinking. MM

Or is there something that is supposed to go into the hole that may have fallen out?" My Reply: 1. If there is a clean hole, I feel something is missing. Maybe a bolt since it has a steel sleeve. A Dick Bill to let air in vs a vacuum occurring and not allowing oil out (check a part's diagram/list). My saw has a cotter pin in that breather hole. 2. Please get a pic posted, as my attachment will show the cotter on my 80s saw. I feel my saw leaks a small amount at the port. The old saw's 2-part aluminum oil case is a source for a leak (marked) that torquing and ext silicone and removing oil helps vs the Real Job of replacing the gasket. 3. Check the oil delivery at the port supplying oil to the bar. If it is clogged and not flowing free, it could be influencing more oil to come out the other hole due to pressure being pumped into the oil tank. Good Luck! PS.
