Troy-built horse serial no.

Where is the serial no on an old horse?

Mine is so old that it has the "V" shaped fiber disk reversing wheel instead of the flat one. But try as I mite, I can't find the serial no.

Or does anyone have a valid serial no. that I can use to download the manual for it?

I blew the moter last week (threw the rod on a Tecumseh HH60) and while I have it down I want to replace the seals on the tiller and go thru it.

Any help?

I think the serial number is located on top of the transmission. It will be stamped on the top right side. At least that is where i found mine. I have a 1972 Horse.

#20691 = Jan 1971 started with serial #16108 and July 1971 started with #21840. 7,589 units were built during that period. #34054 = Apr 1972 started serial #32140 and Jul 1972 started at serial #38000. I just checked the manual. I guess I should get my own act together because I haven't done most of the suggested lubes. I have certainly greased the belt Block adjuster and the two heavy vertical rods that the whole engine assembly slides up and down on for belt tension. I don't see any specific grease indicated. You may need to remove the rods if they are really messed up. Make sure you mark/determine the proper height. But then one is supposed to oil every moving bar connection and shaft. If you suspect that transmission oil has leaked out, you will need to fill it with either 90 or 140wt transmission oil via the hole under the T handle.

Thanks Bill. The problem is, I pulled off the air filter cover, and underneath is a silver sticker for the model and serial number, but the sticker is blank where the engine serial number should be. Not sure if there is an alternate location for the engine serial#? Can't believe it's this difficult dating a Troy-Bilt Horse built in the late '90s, especially with the serial number of the actual unit.

Do you mean on the transmission housing casting, on the top right side, strait above the wheel axel, on the flat casted pad about 2 3/4 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide, sticking out from under the top cover? It looks to me like that pad was put in the casting mold for a place to stamp the serial no.

Mine is blank.
I have cleaned it down to the machined mill marks and nothing.
Would there be another place to look or do I have one that never got stamped?

doesn't work for me. But that may be due to MTD doing website maintenance. I'll try again later.

Don, that "pad" is where the serial number is supposed to be.
If you still need to find a fiber reverse disk, just go to your local TroyBilt dealer. I picked one up last year.
There are several sources for the seals- your local dealer can help, as well as any local bearing/seal supply house.
The seals aren't that expensive, so I just did my one-stop shopping at the dealer.
