Why are my Matrona sedum coming up green?

Do they develop the color as the foliage matures, or did the blasted things revert? BAH!

Mine are green also during the early stages. They change later.

Don't know the reason-- possibly needs more heat or more intense light.

I haven't had problems with Matrona sporting. But other sedums certainly do. When I see the rogues, they have a very brief lifespan.

My Matrona were green, with burgundy stems, from the begging of spring until fall. Why, are they supposed to be a diffrent color?

I'm bumping this thread because I just bought Sedum Matrona and have a question. This specimen is gorgeous -- not flowering but quite tall and bright green with some budding...no sign of distress at all. Soil doesn't look at rocky as some of the other found in the containers of the succulents I bought today but it's dry to the touch on the top. I bought it for a location under my 15 ft tall deck. The deck is south sun facing and the soil underneath is INCREDIBLY rocky. Like so rocky my husband had a use a jack hammer to get into the soil to build our deck. We're also on a bit of a slope. Anyway, I've been wanting to get some sedums for down there since I know some of them do well in partial shade...I can plant them next to the posts so they'll be slightly shaded/protected from excess moisture but mostly in a sunny location. Question is: How do I know if my soil is well draining? I'm assuming it is since it's so darn rocky but what do I know? The answer is: next to nothing. This is a new hobby of mine. Anyway, do I want to try and dig a hole for this sedum or should I just keep it in the pot (or get a larger one) and prop it up next to one of the outermost deck posts?

Mine is in its third season, and is currently a dullish gray-green. It will purple-ize soon once the sun intensifies, days lenthen and it warms up. The original plant I go did throw up a bunch of green stems mid-summer of its first year. I cut off the purple ones, rooted them, and the plants they became have remained all purple for 2 full seasons.

Thanks for all the replies! I ended up buying (3) Matrona over the weekend. They're going to be planted next to a grouping of lamb's ear (a good lot of which needs to be removed, holy moly does that stuff take over!), I think the foliage contrast will be just what that spot needs, and I'm lacking a fall bloomer in that area. Matrona was next to Black Jack on the bench, and I really did prefer the foliage of Matrona. Sedum foliage is "heavy" to my eye, and the very dark Black Jack foliage was just too heavy and foreboding for my taste. Anyway, the area gets a good amount of sun, though not a full 8 hours (probably 5-6 hours of afternoon sun). I figure if the lamb's ear are thriving (thriving isn't a stong enough word....) the sedum will do just fine there.

Muddydog I thought your opening statement was rude & moronic; unnecessarily hostile to a kind person looking to help out fellow plant lovers. I can only assume it comes from you being somehow monetarily linked to the retail side (money driving meanness). Sure there is truth to a similar thought, that it's important to support our local nurserymen & women, but there is nothing wrong with a little scavenging clearance items. If you really wanted to support the locals, then instead of your nasty little whining about 90 cent clearance items, you should be *kindly* extolling the virtues of local nursery stock & service. Crypper there is nothing wrong with Sedum Matrona on clearance. It's bulletproof. The common sedums always go on sale in the early winter at the box stores and they're always an excellent value for beginners because they always survive. Once you grow them for a couple years though, you'll be wanting to visit the better nurseries to get the more elite cultivars. :^) - Tom

They're supposed to be greyish-green with burgundy stems, not just plain 'ol green.

Jean, sedum 'Black Jack' is a sport of 'Matrona'. Thing is, my 'Black Jack' is reverting back to 'Matrona'. I've read if this happens, you should divide them so 'Matrona' doesn't take over.
Mxk3, how long have you had your 'Matrona'? Maybe it'll get better color once it warms up.

Most sedum come up green first and then their flowers develop later. It's a very gradual process, it's actually neat to see. I have several types, and my leaves are just now developing the burgandyish color on the tips of the foliage.

Last November I bought 4 Sedum in 1-2 gallon pots, 1 Autumn joy, 2 Matrona, and 1 Purple Emperor. They were on sale, $5 apiece. They overwintered in pots.

I just went out and checked what they look like. The Autumn Joy is completely green. The Matrona is green with a purply tinge along the edge of the foliage, a bit in the stalks. The Purple emperor has very purple foliage. Can't wait to see how the bloom!

terrene, you'll like the autumn joy, the flowers start coming on mine in mid-July, a pretty pinkish, then they gadually get darker mauve and then almost a rust color by fall. The others I have get about 5-6" tall and get yellow and red flowers, while the foilage is tipped in a burgandyish color.
