Peggy Martin's original name?

I would like the opportunity to show Peggy Martin. Does anyone know the original name or have they shown this rose and under what name?

I believe that Peggy Martin is the name you need to put on the tag and it is classified as a climber, but I don't have the handbook handy.

As far as I know, its original identity has not been determined.

I have 2012 Handbook for Selecting Roses by the ARS and it is not listed.

floridarose : its just one plant. Initially i thought of planting a second one on the other side of the arbor but i thought it may be too much for the arbor to take. It roots very easily. i actually got a cutting from a nearby day lily farm. I had gone to see their dayliies and saw this rose on the owners fence and started talking to him about it. He was so generous that he gave me a big cutting to try out. I made quite a few,can't recollect how many but 3 made it. The owner told me a different name but said its beeing called Peggy Martin now.

I can guarantee that you would not be disappointed in this rose! You cannot kill it, in fact it seems to thrive with neglect! I bought this rose from a grower in SC and basically left it in its little original pot for a full year and then some while sitting in an old herb bed by my patio. During that time it threw out huge laterals across my patio like an octopus! Then on a hot day just before it was about to bloom (it was completely covered in buds) I did the biggest no no in the gardening world, I dug it up and because the rose had grown through the pot and into the ground I had to hack off most of the roots. I literally dragged it across the yard and to the fence we had just had installed. Well the ground there was so hard that I couldn't cat a proper hole so I just did the best I could and packed some of the hard clay dirt around the exposed roots. I cut off most of the laterals and watered and left it alone. I basically forgot about it, and then decide to go see how it was doing, well as one would imagine it didn't look to good at all, in fact I would have said it was toast. So I left it again and figured I would dig it up later. A week later that rose had put out a bunch of new laterals and was covered in new growth! She even bloomed again that same year! Now she is the biggest rose and healthiest rose I have and she's the youngest too. An absolute beauty! And to top it all off she produced a seedling while she was in that herb bed and now I have two of her! Best rose ever!

Peggy sent me a photo of the original rose on her property and I'm so sorry to say I can't locate it, but I can tell you that the rose covered an ample three-car shed with no problem. After I brought my rose home from Dallas in 2006, we built a trellis for it that runs the length of our shed. Planted a year ago, it has thrown about six 10-15 ft. canes, bloomed quite a bit and also blackspotted, though we hope that will disappear as it matures. Here's the earliest photo I could locate, one that I think was also taken by Dr. Welch, followed by our plant: Pamela, I believe Denny's Louisiana Rambler is a different rose. There were several found roses in Louisiana and Peggy had many of them. You could probably ask on the HRF forum and find out for sure, though.

I moved my Peggy Martin a few years ago. It was about 6' tall with about half a dozen canes. Didn't cut it back at all ... gathered the canes up and tied them with bungie cords so it was easier to get to the base to dig it up. I got a decent sized rootball, which fell apart as soon as I got it out of the hole. Got frustrated and dragged the rose to the new hole, planted it, watered it, and walked away. Kept it watered, when it didn't rain to do the job for me. Only one of the canes died ... the others wilted a bit but recovered. The moral of this story is .... I tend to cut back roses that I'm moving only because it's safer to work with smaller thorny roses. Peggy is thornless so this wasn't a consideration. I prefer to let the rose decide if I've left enough roots to support the amount of top growth. Any canes that wilt and get crispy are obviously unsupported by roots below are removed. Haven't yet lost a rose by doing it this way. One word of caution: Peggy will probably grow back in the original location from root suckers. This is why I now have TWO Peggy Martin roses.

"Peggy Martin" is not listed in Modern Roses 12, the 2011 Official List of Approved Exhibition Names, or the 2012 Handbook for Selecting Roses. I'll ask our Chair of Judges (who is also the ARS Chair of Judges), but at this point, I don't think it can be shown in any class that requires the rose to be named.

MaryRebecca, could you send me an e-mail please (click on "My Page" next to my name)? I'll forward you the full response. In a nutshell, "Peggy Martin" is a found rose. "Found" roses must listed in an official ARS publication showing an Approved Exhibition Name (AEN) to be exhibited in classes where ARS ribbons and certificates are awarded. "Peggy Martin" has not been registered, and does not have an AEN. It cannot be shown except in a special class for "found" roses, if one is included in the show schedule. Perhaps you can encourage the person writing the show schedule to include a "found" roses class.

"The Peggy Martin Rose" (Trademarked, I think) can be shown in a Found Roses class, where that is offered.

Except in VERY rare cases, ARS will not register Study-Named roses.

Years ago, we just showed them in whatever class they fit best, but those days of wild license are gone. :-) Too bad, too. I once entered my foundling "Bud Jones" in the Victorian class, and won a blue ribbon, with Bud Jones judging. THAT was so much fun!

Doesn't hurt to ask for a change in the show schedule! I'm pretty open to changes to ours (within reason or requests with chocolate).

Diane -- A few societies in CA do offer the class for Found Roses, and I think it is offered at National Rose Shows.

One neat thing about offering it is that one man's "found" rose is another's "Known" rose ... so some may be identified in the process. :-)

Of course, I did once show roses at the fairground, where a dear man entered his 'Mr. Lincoln' in the "Found" rose class, because he "found" it in his back yard.

Which was OK -- but he WON. YIKES!

Jeri, LOL! We don't have a "Found Roses" class in our schedule, maybe I'll add it for this year and see what we get!
