Early Oriental Yellows (Primula pictures)

I know that the proper place to post this is gallery, but because I mostly post here and almost never go to gallery myself, I want to post it here. Please excuse me for this.

Below are some picture of my roses taken yesterday and today. I enjoy these roses so much. Fragrance, cheerful color, dark canes, small leaves, everything is right for my taste :)

Oh, how pretty! I almost never go to the gallery either. Pictures like these remind me to, so I'm always happy to see them.

Olga, Thanks again for the photos and the inspiration. I have a question that concerns siting. I planted my young R. hugonis close to a willow in a fairly moist, cool spot (by the standards of my garden). I have other roses in this area: once-blooming old roses, Hybrid Musks, and others, and their growth ranges from surviving to thriving. The R. hugonis did okay until last fall/winter when something dug underneath it. I refilled the hole but the plant is almost dead and isn't picking up again. So I'll have to get a new plant; I just wanted to know whether the conditions--relatively cool, moist, shady--are good for the rose? I would never plant a Tea rose there, for examply, but the Gallicas and 'Louise Odier' nearby look very good. Thanks! Melissa

This year is wierd. Primula started a week ago. Usually it's mid April. But I'd guess that my garden had a subtle but bud nipping freeze sometime in March that reset bloom time. Primula is wonderful, but be careful if you have a mole/vole problem. Mine is where the voles have a convention and it barely hangs on from the damage they do. Thirty feet away, before we moved it, it was doing much better, but the voles didn't like the really sandy soil there. I'd guess that the roots of primula are especially tasty. (This year a centifolia bloomed before primula/hugonis/Canary Bird. Old Blush came out after some teas. Captain Kidd is blooming now; if it's really got setigera in its genes, that's totally out of sync, but it's KC's first bloom. )

Thank you My hugonis is on the corner next to a fairly busy road. Deer avoid it because it is too close to the habitat of their fiercest enemy, the F-150. However, there is an enormous R. cantabrigiensis nearby that is accessible in a garden where other roses are carefully fenced in. It's the size of a one-car garage. So it doesn't look like they are favorites, but if they get a chance to mature, the deer won't be able to reach most of them due to sheer size. I must warn you, though, it isn't an easy rose to root. Tree peonies may last two weeks here if we don't get a heat wave. They are planted on the south side of a big oak tree, so they get morning and afternoon sun, but are shaded midday. I have two kinds of lilacs. Syringa vulgaris, the old fashioned usual kind, which were here when we bought the house. And Syringa microphila, which is next to the driveway. Unlike most of the roses, this one sometimes repeats.

That is beautiful, Olga,just something so charming and beautiful about these roses. I would love to grow this one but I doubt it would bloom well in my area.

Olga, I have a rose that looks just like this, I'm sure it was not R. primula that I bought, I think what was sold to me was R. xanthina (I think Gregg & Phillip told me that was wrong). So, if you're pretty sure yours has the right ID, then I think that's what I've got, too.

It's funny that your bloom time coincides with mine! Our lilacs, and the early roses are blooming now, too. Do you have any scots roses? Mine are in full bloom right now (they typically are early, except for the hybrid "Stanwell Perpetual").

When do your Damask, Centifolia, Alba and Gallica roses bloom? Mine bloom the last half of May, first half of June here.

Patricia, thanks. I don't know about your zone, but here they are really carefree.
Ron, I am sure in my IDs. All came from reputable sources and I am familiar with this roses. Most of my Damask, Centifolia, Alba and Gallica bloom from mid May to mid June.
I do grow spinosissimas and love them. Stanwell Perpetual is very BS prone here, so I don't grow it anymore, but I have several others like Mary Queen of Scotts, Dorenbos Selection (sp?), Double white and some others. They will start blooming this week, I think. Buds already showed color.

Your pictures are wonderful. Since it was your enabling several years ago that made me get Rosa Hugonis, I hope you do not mind that I add my photo to your post.

This rose is in what I call my 45 mph garden bed. It is next to the road and I try to plant things that are big and bright in that bed so that people driving by can appreciate them. It definitely brightens up my garden.

Olga,

These are wonderful. You've enabled me into several of the early yellows. Now, I'd like to try and enable you...Have you tried the species R. wilmottiae? Another forumer suggested this rose to me. It has the little fernlike leaves of the early yellows, but the leaves are the same bluish grey of the albas, and the flowers are delightful hot pink stars. The canes have a reddish pink tint to them. I have no other rose that looks like this. I'm glad I have it in a prominent location.

Just beautiful!
I would love to know the sizes of the roses you have pictured, and how are the thorns? Would you know of any vender that sells these own root? For some reason I think High Country Roses might. In my mind, I have never seen these type roses anywhere around where I am~ (the south).

I think I might have suggested willmotiae to you, Robert, not that I grow it myself. I was reading one of those old rose Annuals that are on Google books (around 1910-1920) and I think an article by Van Fleet suggested that it was as early blooming as the early yellows. Is that your experience?

Jenn, My hugonis came from High Country roses. Other four I have are grafted on Multiflora, from Pickering and Hortico. I think Vintage also have some of the following Hugonis, Cantabrigiensis (another very good one), Primula. You can check some of them should be available, I think. rogue valley Roses also has some, I believe.
Just be aware that they all are going to be really big plants, more like 8x8 and the thorns are beautiful but definitely big.

Olga didn't tell you that primula has scented leaves. The new leaves, on moist warm days, are scented of Old Spice. And it has those wing thorns. The new thorns are ruby-red and perfect triangles. The setting sun sets the new canes alight with red droplets of color.

Olga, there's a primula at the MN Landscape Arboretum that's at least twenty feet wide and ten tall. In bloom, its a-buzz with humming bees. A rose that sings. I love this plant!
