Rosa primula

My Rosa primula is in full bloom now and simply wonderful. Always the first to bloom in the garden, at the end of April. Have any other rose lovers this precocious beauty in your garden? If so, when did the first flower appear?

Certainly. Many people who post on this forum grow and love this rose. I grow several different oriental yellows. My Canary Bird starts blooming even earlier then Primula and Hugonis a little later then primula. This year my primula started on April 23rd and Canary Bird on April 17th.

I always love to hear what others are ordering! I also purchased Soupert et Notting (by suggesstion of another poster) & Juno from Pickering, but received mine back in November. Those red thorns on R. Primula are stunning!!! Someone else was recently talking about that rose and R. Moyesii, I ended up with R. Moyesii (the hips are very unique). You'll have to post pictures once they bloom this spring!

Just GORGEOUS Mad-Gallica! I am so happy to learn about a new rose that I haven't learned about (I'm a bit embarrassed about wondering if they were a potted rose-heehee!) Primula is huge, huge, huge! and I especially love that first photo! They make a terrific celebration for zone 5'ers and other cold zone folks. My Fragrant Cloud blind-growth stems, fully opened on April 21st, and whoo-hoo, it beat the earliest Kansas knockouts which still haven't opened up, much to my surprise! My blooms started as 3" as pictured below but then they became these big fat pendulums later on these very fragile super-thin stems. Yes, blind growth never ceases to amaze me in terms of being able to produce such large blossoms. tiny start: But then the 3" eventually expanded into Big Macs, haha! All blind growth buds became Big Macs. Here are two examples. On the first photo you can especially see how puny and frail the stem is that is supporting that fat bloom (upper right hand corner is the stem). Roses are tough, tough, tough. and another different bloom... Anyway, no matter what, I am still far more impressed by your beauties, Mad-Gallica. Cheers!

Gratz on your first bloom. :D Overhere I got to be patient as well, since we normally get bloom season somewhere in mid May and this year it is 2 weeks late at least. But I also spotted a bud on my tiny Cecile Brunner climber (I still can't get used to the thought that this collection of tiny twigs will get higher than a meter), which probably will open in a couple of days, depending if the weather will get finally warmer. Some bud-dage I also saw on Mme Isaac Pereire and Sympathy. For the later it is actually early, usually she was a slacker, but I guess walking around it with a shovel and discussing which other rose would be good for that spot helped to bring a point across to her. x)

Isn't that great having early blooming roses?? If only I had a bigger yard..... My earliest bloomer is Stanwell Perpetual. Looks like maybe he'll bloom within the next week. Marie Bugnet and Friends Forever are getting close too. John - I sure would love to see all your roses. I remember your website from a few years ago. It was such a great resource for me when I was trying to find info on roses that will be hardy in our climate. Now I'm growing around 130 roses from many different classes.

Here, Primula started Monday. We are still waiting for R. hugonis to open a flower. Usually the two are neck and neck, but the cooler weather we had last week seems to have slowed the hugonis down more.

This year is wierd.
Primula started a week ago. Usually it's mid April. But I'd guess that my garden had a subtle but bud nipping freeze sometime in March that reset bloom time.
Primula is wonderful, but be careful if you have a mole/vole problem. Mine is where the voles have a convention and it barely hangs on from the damage they do. Thirty feet away, before we moved it, it was doing much better, but the voles didn't like the really sandy soil there. I'd guess that the roots of primula are especially tasty.
(This year a centifolia bloomed before primula/hugonis/Canary Bird. Old Blush came out after some teas. Captain Kidd is blooming now; if it's really got setigera in its genes, that's totally out of sync, but it's KC's first bloom. )

Of the Central Asian yellows and their hybrids, which is the latest to bloom?

I have something that is just setting buds now. The foliage is vaguely apple scented. The buzz is apple-scented foliage would make it Canary Bird.

Doorenbos Selection, a spinossissima, was the first to bloom in my garden on April 29, but at my old house r Primula was blooming well on around April 20.

Canary Bird is the FIRST of all early yellows to bloom and the foliage is not apple scented, at least not on my CBs and I have two from different sources.

We are two weeks behind with the cool weather. Still Primula is leafing out faster than the others. Already I can smell the leaves cedar-Old Spice scent.

... and what really counts for me is it is rock hardy in zone 3a, prairie foothills. Still dormant but the leaf buds are beginning to swell.
