MTD and the mix

MTD has a bad rap on here and, by and large, not undeservedly so. They've bought-up a good deal of classic makers and melded them into their operations to create a company of many brands but basic designs.

I have 2 acres to worry about and had a 3hp Murray, a Homelite weed-eater, and a Ford 8N/5'shredder to deal with the issue. But, I decided I still needed something in-between. Not wanting to drop a car down-payment on a friggin' riding mower....I checked all the local incentives through and wound up at the Big Blue Box buying a Troy-Bilt Pony. The gleaming Cadets and the like are bothersome, but, when I figured paying more for a 25hp CC/JD with all the bells than I did for my entire 8N overhaul/new shredder.........I can't deal with that.

So, MTD-clone it was and $1k lighter I am fine with the deal.

In 1983 my dad bought a Montgomery-Ward 10hp/36" rider.....and it was the cat's meow next to the 5hp Huffy we had been using. That mower lasted until the early 90's until it began to lose cylinder rings, compression, and general guts. All there otherwise, but, the motor failed and it was sidelined. Dad splurged and bought an MTD 12.5/38" model in 93/94 to replace it. I as a mere youngster had my doubts about the new unit, but, jumped on and figured it out. It didn't seem to have the same integrity of the MW, but with a lot of extra gears and more comfortable and a little quieter.

This little MTD is still working today with the same routine maintenance and attention as any other machine he has. I have been stunned at what obviously seemed a cheaper version of the original lasting so long and doing so very healthily. Wal-Mart sells the exact virtual machine today, only in 13.5hp, at $819 and I was originally bent on buying it after our experience with the machine in the past. But, I wanted the extra width and hp and went with its big brother in the Troy for the extra dough.

They aren't works of engineering genius, but, for one looking to get a mower (not a small tractor) for reasonable bucks I'm not complaining.
