Gaillardia 'Fanfare' Gone

I planted two Gaillardia 'Fanfare' last year, next to each other. Both grew well and flowered nicely last season. In doing my garden cleaning this spring, I pulled the dead growth from one and left it on the other. Wouldn't you know it, the one I pulled the dead top growth from has dissapeared completely and the other is leafing out abundantly. Anyone else have a similair experience, losing a 'fanfare'? Did you remove the dead growth?

A couple of years ago I lost one of the two Fanfares I had planted. I don't know if I removed the dead growth or not - that shouldn't affect things. I know gaillardias in general don't like my wet clay soil. I try to amend, but I just think they like dryer conditions than I have. I still have one, and it's doing fine, but not increasing from year to year.

Yup, I had three three years ago... last year the three had become one... and the year the three has become zero. I'm very sad, because I thought they were supposed to be indestructible. Grrr.

I haven't seen it, but it could bea natural hybrid from Fanfare and something like Burgandy or Red Plume. Even if you don't find a new name for it, keep me in mind. I would love to get seeds from this Gaillardia. Thanks, Tina

I've been growing Goblin for three years in clay. I grew it from seed, and every year a let a few flowers go to seed and they make plenty of seedlings. I'm not sure if I still have the original plants, but the ones that are there are healthy and make gobs of flowers from spring until frost. They get no supplemental water and are in a raised bed, which is probably important. I don't know if Fanfare makes viable seed, but if it does, I think it's worth a try. I love them. I put a few in pots to give away last year, and then didn't see the person for three weeks. They bloomed their fool heads off without missing a beat. I bet they would make excellent container plants, if you want to try them that way.

I've tried twice to grow Fanfare and have finally decided to give up on them. They didn't make it through even one winter here. The first time I lost one I thought it was the site so I planted the next one in a raised bed with good drainage. Same result. Looked good all summer, gone the next spring. Burgundy on the other hand has stuck with me for 15 years now and it's planted in an area that should be death to it. Maybe it stays around out of gratitude. It was a .25 cent rescue plant that I picked up late in the season.

Same here. Was tempted to buy it again, but not for $16-17 for a potted Monrovia plant when I know I lost it the first winter I had it. Its blooms are incredible. I might try again if I can find a less expensive one, make the soil less "clay-ey" (my new word!) and mulch more in fall. Same thing with agastache rupestris. I loved it so much the year I had it! :0) Phyl

I have a terrible time with gaillardia. I can often get it to over winter once, but rarely twice. Gaillardia can be finicky. I have clay soil that has been amended heavily with compost, but I still can't get Gaillardia to stick around. I get so frustrated because one of my favorite perennials is 'summer kiss' gaillardia. I can never get it to last long in my garden. I've just given up and I'm focusing on things that thrive.

If y'all had told me a week ago, I could've supplied you with all the Gaillardia you want, and then some. I find them to be short-lived plants, and you have to let them reseed a little to keep them going. They should also not be pruned back until late in the season, because I've had perfectly dead looking Gaillardia come back strong. Mine are in full sun in clay soil and do just fine.

I gave up on this one, too, won't be buying any more, don't know what happened as I let them be but saw no sign of them this season so far.

Glad you started this post because I was going to ask a question to see if Gaillardia Fanfare is truly a perennial, or is it really a reseeding annual in zones 6 and below. My neighbor gave me a piece of hers last fall, and it did not return this spring. Her main plants don't seem to be alive either, but there are a couple of self-seeded seedlings growing.

I received some seeds in a trade that I may try planting. I may have some to share. Email if you'd like me to send you some seeds.
