May buy a HFGH today, please help with dimension

Well.....They are on sale AND I have the 20% coupon, thinking of making the plunge. Can someone tell me the height at the roof peak? I have a possible interference problem with my gutter, I really want to have one of the end walls next to my house if it will fit.

And of course I forgot to say that it is the 10 x 12 model I'm interested in.

From the peak to the top of the foundation is 117". I buried my foundation, but I think it's 5" tall.

I must admit that you guys seem like a happy group for people that admit that they bought a less than quality product but decided to make the best of it AND MAKE IT BETTER. That is why AMERICA will always win. We never quit. I personally grew up on an Island, connected to the mainland by a bridge, granted, but the nearest town of any size was 42 miles away and it wasn't all that big either. My father could make ANYTHING FIT or WORK and I can recall time and time again when he did just that. I am very pleased to acknowledge that I have those genes running in my veins. The Oreintials (read China) might be able to make it cheaper, but WE make it BETTER. I absolutely LOVE to read how y'll have improved and strengthen those little flimsy, twisty pieces of left over beer cans and made them into things of beauty and STRENGTH. (thumbs up sign) Sounds like you did your homework and have planned well. The parts list for the HFGH shows 144 clips. I recall someone reporting trouble with panels blowing out; and another reporting a similar problem was resolved upon finding a way to clamp the door securely closed. Sounds like you've been reading the threads, but in case you missed it, at least one person secured the panels with rivets. We've had winds here gusting to 50 mph and, so far, haven't had a problem. We taped both ends of the panels. Running a quick 'n' dirty calculation, 24 2' wide panels x 2 edges = 48 2' edges = 96', plus a little extra b/c the end pieces are cut on an angle and then a little more in case you mess up once or twice ... one 150-foot roll should do it. Apparently the copper in the new treated lumber will cause the aluminum to corrode. In an April 23 message on the "Harbor Freight Club" thread, Cactusfreak posted a link to an article on this; I've attached a link to the article below. If you haven't already done so, you might want to take a look at that thread; I'm not sure what page it's on, but the last post was on Nov. 20 '05. Have you seen the thread "HFGH Assembly" posted by confiers? Great reference; he took pictures throughout the construction process and added some comments as well. Are you planning to use any kind of insulation in or on your greenhouse? I used 1" thick foil-faced foam board on the north wall and the north 1/3 of the east and west walls, then wrapped the whole thing in a solar pool cover. Have a lot of water containers in there too, which really come in handy since we haven't run a water line out there yet. Since you're in a colder climate, have you any thoughts on excavating down below the soil line and installing insulation below-ground as some folks have done? (I didn't do it, kinda wondering if maybe I should have.) I've seen some Japanese style gardens and do find them to be very tranquil. We have a koi pond/water garden in one corner of the yard and I'm aiming for an ambience similar to that in a Japanese garden, but with mostly native plant material - there's a nicely gnarled mountain laurel nearby as a good start. Vicki, tell your hubby not to be such a nitpicker. The guy who levels the area can go a little bit over sized, and then it can be taken care of when you back fill to the size of the foundation. As far as the need for a true foundation, it looks like to me that this GH does not really require it. My recommendation is, unless you want to put it onto a poured concrete or laid concrete block foundation (which might require you to have a building permit) just dig holes at the corners, and about every two to three feet along the sides (on the inside) and set treated wood posts at least three feet deep. Then attach your treated two by eight base frame to it. I don't have one of these GH's yet, but hopefully someone who does will send you the dimensions from thiers. If not, open the box and find the instruction sheet. (If worse comes to worse, you may have to measure your base plates. I've bought Harbor Freight stuff in the past, and know first hand how "good" thier instructions are.) Kevin

annz - Thanks for your reply! Ideally I'd like more time to choose. I took Forever to pick the wall colors, and drove DH up a wall (I'm surprised we're still married - ha ha!). This is my way of sort of making it up to him, lol. Although Benjamin Moore has some no voc paints that we can get locally, we choose American Pride b/c it's supposed to be non toxic (we have a baby and are renovating the entire house - which we've yet to move into, so I'm trying to be as green and non toxic as possible). sueb20 - Thank you for your suggestions! Yes, I agree that we should paint the doors and trim the same color. (Thanks for setting me straight!) And, thank goodness that the ceiling doesn't need to match the trim exactly. Atrium White and Decorators White are very pretty, but the lighting in our home was not doing them justice. And so, the winner is - Simply White! It looks white, without any gray or blue tint to it. And I like how it has a touch of warmth - as most of our colors are warm, and we have a lot of northern light. It's not my favorite white for our one Beacon Gray bathroom, but it will still look nice. As for the bedroom that will have Mascarpone on the bottom - I'm still a little concerned there b/c Simply White is very close in color and doesn't "pop" like a cooler white would, but hopefully the semi gloss sheen will help with the contrast a bit. We'll see... Overall though, I think Simply White will work really great in our home, and I'm excited to see everything painted! Thank you all again for your replies! You're the best!! :)

I have 2--10X12 HFGH hooked together back to back love the space. I have orchids hanging from the roof and can walk under them with no problen, so can my brother who is 6'2" tall. I just went out and measured from the very top of the gable to the bottom of the base that comes with the GH and it is 10ft 4in. I also have that base on 2X8 so I could make it higher because of the orchids. Good luck to you. You will find lots of information on this site.

Thanks all for the prompt responses. As a follow up question, what would be the ramifications of attaching the end (opposite the door) wall directly to my brick house, without using the glazing? I know it would create some sealing challenges, but I am thinking of the "heat sink" gains I could get from the brick. The location I am considering would have that wall against the brick anyway. Has anyone done this? Funnylady..when you said yours were back to back, did you mean that it formed a continuous greenhouse 24' long?

You're probably not going to pick up a huge amount of heat off the brick wall. In fact, in winter, it's possible that it may actually wick heat away from the greenhouse interior. In addition, for structural reasons and sealing reasons it would be better to build the greenhouse as designed - with the glazing installed - and butt the end of it to the brick. That way you will get most of the wall's radiated energy into the greenhouse without it being in direct contact.

The idea you described is basically a lean-to type of greenhouse, but those have to be carefully designed to get decent solar benefits.

web4deb, are any of the panels easily removed? Or can you see of a way to customize it so that some of the top panels can be removed for summer ventilation if using it as a regular grow area?

HFGH sale

I was able to get the greenhouse yesterday. List (In Louisville KY) 799. Sale price and coupon resulted in total of 551 including tax.

Try to get on their email list. I get the 20% coupon maybe monthly, it is only usually good for a weekend (the weekend following the email). I believe the GH is on sale until 9-21. I did see it in a flyer. You can call your nearest store and ask them if they have the item (93358) and the sale price. It should come up on the computer as (I think) 649.

BTW they have the coupon fixed where it can't be forwarded by email??

Great, thanks! I called and they have it for $649. I don't have a coupon but he has one and will hold one for me so I can get the 20% off.

Did you do alot of research on the HFGH? It seems either it works or doesn't from searching in the forums here. Of course, one needs to make modifications to improve the stability..

safaribabe: I didn't do a huge amount of research, but did enough to know that there's a lot of help out there, both in improvements and "gotchas" notification. I have built two hoophouses, and realized that I wanted something that would shed snow better and be better insulated. After some preliminary pricing of the HFGH I think it would have cost me almost as much in material to do a wood frame with the twinwall covering.

BTW, on my coupon, there is a place to invite a friend to be placed on the HF preferred customer list to receive emails. If you haven't gotten signed up, send me your email and I will enter it. I get one or two email ads per week with items on sale, and a 15 or 20% coupon every 6 wks to 2 months.

The Harbor Freight website lists the shipping weight of the 10x12 at 216 pounds. I don't recall the dimensions of the box, but you could probably call their toll free number and ask.

You can just google search "HF Coupon" and it pops up and you print it out. I did that today when I bought the little one (6' x 8') which was already on sale, so it was $209.
