Removable greenhouse (pics, pics ----)
Comments (15)My Father-in-law and I just finished a raised bed greenhouse. We live in cold clay soil that does not warm til mid June but the daytime temps are quite warm as early as late April. So we insulated the bed from the cold with 2" of dense foam and placed 18" of clay soil over the top. Then we put up 4x4's up to about 4 1/2 feet above the top of the soil and built a frame. Temporary plastic goes over the frame and a door is built in the side to open as needed. It works! The greenhouse heats up even on cloudy days and the soil is warmed greatly! I have melons and pumpkins starting to get second leaves - unheard of around here! Actually, melons are normally an impossibility in this cold clay soil. The plastic will come off in early June and will probably mulch with straw around the outside to help hold water. A picture is shown at http://wayneofthewoods.com/greenh8.jpg The steps used for building this are at the link below. Comments (17)OK, I'm back. Eastpenna, ordering from Harbor Freight is sorta like herding cats through a three-ring circus. Always an adventure. ;-) The person you spoke with was incorrect and/or confused; the clips are still available. Here is the info you need to call back with. The clips are identical for both the 6x8 greenhouse and the 10x12 greenhouse. However, Harbor Freight uses different part and SKU numbers for each kit. I asked him to look up both for us, so I could post it all here. He said to be sure to give them the SKU number and that will avoid confusion. (Good luck with that, lol.) For the 6x8 greenhouse: Part number 46 panel clip SKU number 27339, set of 72 clips, $9.99 For the 10x12 greenhouse: Part number 53 panel clip SKU number 29457, set of 130 clips, $15.99 Hope this helps, feel free to post back if this doesn't work. Be prepared to speak slowly and be persistent. ;-) Sheri...See MoreGreenhouse Maintenance in MN Winter
Comments (2)As-is, I wouldn't trust it to hold up too well. But with a couple pieces of electrical conduit, you can build a support truss to keep the walls from buckling under the load of the roof. This past winder I had a couple of feet on mine with no signs of trouble. Here is a link that might be useful: my HFGH 10x12...See MoreGreenhouse pics
Comments (5)Thanks for the kind comments. Its all redwood. I liked the wood frame look and knew from experience that sealing or staining redwood is a HIGH maintenance job. My neighborhood is filled with decks, fences and other redwood installations that look GREAT the first year, a bit tired the second and worn out by the third, unless the owners keep on the annual sealing regime. I painted mine with oil based primer and top coat...in another life I'd have used marine grade epoxy paint but...that insight came too late to be helpful. The intake shutters and exhaust fan was planned from the beginning...it would have been ugly to cut into the block wall as an after-thought....See Morebirdwidow
