Are these both Rudbeckia Irish Eyes?

They are both from wintersown seeds last year. I think the first picture is the real Irish Eyes but am unsure about the second plant.

Looks like Irish Eyes to me! It's a pretty plant which reseeds well. Mine is back again this year.

The reason I am questioning the second one is because the flowers are double and more droopy. These are two different plants.

Hi Terrene - I grew my original Rue plants from seed, using HM/GL, 5-6 years ago, for a now defunct Biblical Herb Garden. They made a really nice plant, bushy,about 2' high in my raised bed-flowered in the 2nd or third year. I had to get rid of them (long, stupid story) and Brandi Mulvaine sent me some seeds last year. I WSed them in March, I think, and planted them in the raised bed in August. I hope the cats find them this year! I had BST all summer, have a pic of one laying eggs on the dill. I can hardly wait to see what this year brings-butterflywise! Shirley!

I had a nice double (supposed to be cherry brandy) but more dark orange but it didn't come back. Maybe something will show up from it next year; I know to look for the soft, velvety leaves. I might have saved some seeds somewhere for that one, too. They're not my favorite but they're practical as they keep down weeds. Mine have crossed and grown thick. So they can just take over for all I care. I got quite different color combos I wouldn't pick from a catalog but work in well, and the clumps are uniform then change to a different clump nearby. Some are more tolerant to drought than others, lost one clump. I should have taken more photos of those when they were nicer. Prairie sun came back true in two places. I just let them self seed, take what I get (can always yank ones I intensely dislike) and will make them the mainstay of my garden along with phlox and iris and a few others. This is strange. Got a prairie sun volunteer on the extreme north side of the house, and it's blooming prettily (but went into bloom later). Nice to know they are shade tolerant like that, just gets a little morning sun, that's it.

Phyl - both are good! Did you try Germania or Johnny's? They don't all come back in my zone, some do, some don't... I'm slowly shrinking my rudbeckia beds, customers don't seem to really like them as much as dahlia/lilies/suns/dianthus, etc. Wendy

ramazz, will my irish eye bloom this year? It was wintersown just this year.

Yes, mine bloomed last year, later in the summer. The plants are larger this year, obviously, and are blooming earlier. With my rudbeckias, I wasn't sure what would turn out to be perennial and I am pleased that these are back!

I saw this plant on the internet combined with perovskia and cleome, stunning! That's what I did :) Hopefully, it will look the same. However, my wintersow perovskia is only 1" tall. LOL :P

According to everything I've read these are just self-sowing annuals or short-lived perennials if you're lucky. I've never had the same one come back in the same place. To me that is what a perennial does. These always come up from seeds in another spot.

Well, some of my rudbeckias came back and some didn't. The Irish Eyes in the first picture definitely came back in the same spot, and it was labeled Irish Eyes. The other plant is equally large, but last year it was part of a clump with some completely different, darker flowered ones. The darker flowered ones did not come back. I also have a ton of rudbeckias that self-sowed. I am hoping some of them are the dark ones, because a couple of those were quite striking. I had a few short ones that I think are 'Becky' that came back, and I didn't expect them to.

ramazz: Your first picture looks more like Prarie Sun to me. Notice the more golden rays around the eye, and the petals don't droop- they stick out more horizontally.

The second looks like Irish Eyes, with the droopy petals.

Most of my rud hirtas live 2 years then croak, but I do have a few starting their 3rd year. I've wintersown Becky, Irish Eyes, and Prarie Sun. They cross pollinated and last year, from my harvested seeds, I ended up with a most beautiful green-eyed double.

Oh...my...goodness! I have been trying to sign on for almost 8 hours just to say that I thought that first picture was Prairie Sun, lol! I was so excited that I could finally ID something, which is unusual for me, but I couldn't log in to GW. Not that I sat here for 8 straight hours, of course, but I kept coming back to the computer to give it a try.

Oh well, I guess Karen beat me to it, but I do agree - I think the first picture is Prairie Sun.

My Irish Eyes seed came up looking just like the one they are saying is Prairie Sun. LOL. They are so similar. I had no idea. I didn't like Irish Eyes so I ripped it out of my flower garden...The thing is back again this year. It can stay. Anything that determined deserves to grow!

If you compare these to the first ones I posted, none are exactly the same. I think these two may be better representations of Irish Eyes and Prairie Sun, and the other two are probably cross-pollinated. Still pretty, though.

Karen, I love the doubles that have the curly petals. I had several of those last year, but they didn't come back. I am waiting to see what the seedlings turn out to be.

I harvested seeds from those doubles last year. I'm anxious to see what the new generation will look like.
