In warmer regions, taller greenhouses would be desirable because the heat collects at a higher strata and away from the plants below. Obviously, fans and air circulation devices agitate the air inside and breaks up this stratification but you cannot change the tendency of hot air to rise above cooler air. Consider an 8-foot tall GH, now imagine that the "warm air layer" towards the top of the GH is 2 feet thick. This only leaves a "cool air layer" of 6 feet from the ground up and the air within this layer gets warmer as you go up. Now lets consider a 15-foot tall GH. Even if we had a "warm air layer" on top at 4 feet thick, we still have a "cool air layer" of 11 feet from the ground up. Now these figures are not precise calculations. This is just to present the idea of how the taller greenhouses provide the benefit of moving the warm air further up and away from the growing section of the GH. Taller greenhouses of course, will have more surface area exposed to the sun. That is why my taller GH example above had a 4-foot thick warm air layer compared to the 2-foot layer of the previous GH example. Taller is not the only solution though. A wider or longer greenhouse will also provide this benefit. By increasing the footprint of the GH, you are increasing the area where the hot air can go to, so it spreads out thinner. **BUT this requires proper balancing of how much "warm air" space you gain versus the additional surface area you expose to the sun. You would want this "attic" to be capable of holding more hot air than the solar load produces. Bigger greenhouses will also have higher heating costs if you provide artificial heating.

This is my frist year with Susie Q.I get her from ebay this spring.She bloomed alittle at the end of summer. When I took it in the GH there were about 18 buds. She did drop a few. no,because of the base. your CFL uses a 4-pin base, which to my knowledge does not come in an LED version. 13W is a low wattage alternative lamp. The only change would be an 8W as you mentioned or a different fixture.

Great Advise deb_pa! We sold our stick built house and bought a mh in a 55+ community and are pleased with our investment. Before we moved in we had the master bath, main bath and kitchen redone, floor to ceiling. New cabinets, floors, tile, plumbing, paint, and assessories. We're touching up right now and looking forward to doing some other projects around the house and will do it ourselves as well. And like you, we do it when we have the money to pay for it. All the work and moving in took its toll however, as my misses had to visit the hosp for back surgery. So she is home enjoying her new digs! We live in the PNW. Where do you call home?
