Question for Jim_W_NY About Baltimore Belle

Jim --

How are you growing your BB? Can it be grown without support of some kind? As a shrub type? How would it do between fence posts with heavy chain or rope between the posts? Too massive?

My BB has long floppy canes with very little branching that need tying. (Unlike big climbers like New Dawn that have stiff, heavy canes with lots of branching) I've yet to figure out a good way to do that. Last year I just tied them to stakes interspered within the bush. It grows against the garage so that side is supported. By itself it would be about a 10x10' bush.

The canes are thin so it shouldn't take much to support them. It is 5 years old this year and so far the canes remain on the thin side so it seems that is the way it is.

Mine is still young, but the plan is to grow it on a split rail fence. The Queen of the Prairies we had there before produced very, very long thin canes that could be easily trained along the rails, and even doubled back. I'm expecting the same thing from Baltimore Belle.

My Zephy is not hardy here in my Z5 yard, although it is only a couple years old. I got it as a band from RU a couple years ago. I think this past winter was it's third winter. It is planted on the east end of my front porch. It is in a protected location recieving the least amount of wind/weather and yet it still completely dies down to the ground each year and blooms very sporadically for me. Maybe it will improve as it matures a bit but so far it has not been hardy for me. Mine is an own root, so it comes back pretty strong each spring, but has never gotten over about 6 foot tall. It gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight per day plus another couple hours of indirect sunlight, so maybe that is part of the problem with mine. My Awakening climber, which is supposed to be a better/improved version of New Dawn has been much more hardy for me, although the bunnies did it in this past winter. They ate everything they could reach from the ground/snow so I was left with a detached 15' tall tangled thorny mess to remove from the side of my chimney. Next winter I will put up some kind of bunny proof barrier around it's feet to keep the bunnies away. :I also planted a Dublin Bay climber late last year. It was just a small own root band, so it didn't do much in the short time it was in the ground. Since it was so new and small, I did winter protect it with a rose cone. So far this spring it seems to be doing nicely. I have been training it on the lattice along the side of my deck. Hopefully that one will prove hardy for me also.

jannorcal, thanks for the info on posting pics Several posters: I have tried Austin's, 9 in fact. So I'm not that eager to try more given the great number of other roses I want to get a look at. But I read about an Austin that's a hybrid rugosa plus Noisette. Said to be hardy and looks cute. Mistress Quickly. Not in my old CRL but maybe in a newer edition. Will check it out. And thanks for the many posts. John how did you get those dogs to sit still for that pic. Riku, fabulous. Well, I still think there is a lot of room on the Roses forum for posting about Austin's. And not enough discussion of the more rare roses out there. This spring I planted an Enfant de France. What in May! And it is covered with beautiful Austin style roses. Who knows how it will fare in the years ahead but I didn't read about it here. QR tipped me off on that one and sure enough Pickering had it. And I'm going to post a question about another interesting rose in QR, Mme. Driout. Also missing here.

If anyone is looking for these, NOW is the time of year to be getting them at local garden centers. For anyone in the Denver area, you should be able to get them at Paulino's and/or Timberline Gardens. In their catalog this year, Paulino's lists these varieties: 'Lord Baltimore', 'Lady Baltimore', 'Clown', 'Crimson Wonder', 'Fantasia', 'Kopper King', 'Moy Grande', 'Blue River II', 'Southern Belle Mix', and 'Disco Belle' in all the colors. If you stop by there, be sure to ask for a copy of their perennial catalog. The heights of these, depending on variety, range from about 4' to 7' or more, and the flower size ranges from about 6" to a good foot in diameter. Each flower lasts only one day, but they are constantly replaced by many, many more until fall. Mine continued until almost Halloween last year. The wilting flowers will drop off by themselves in a few days, but to keep them looking neater (since there are so many flowers on established plants), I usually go around every couple days and pull dying flowers off--you don't need a scissors. If I don't have something with me to collect them in, I just toss them in a pile at the bottom of the plant and pick up the pile later. Last fall, when I was cutting them down for winter, I snipped off a whole bunch of the dry seed heads to use in dried arrangements. These are definitely NOT xeric perennials, and will require consistant watering all summer. They can be grown in wet to boggy soil, so you don't need to worry about overwatering them. The most important thing to know about them is that they come up very, very, very late in spring! I have 3 established Disco Belle's, and they didn't appear at all until the beginning of June this year. So be sure you know where they are and just wait--and wait--and wait for them. When they do come up they grow VERY quickly! BUT, she said with a tear in her eye, my 3 beautiful pink Disco Belle's that are supposed to get about 4' tall and are already almost 5', and just started blooming within the last 2 weeks, got TOTALLY smooshed down by the inch of rain I got yesterday in less than half an hour! I'm not really complaining since we need the rain so badly, but I sure do hope they're able to stand back up by themselves when they dry off. (It's raining again right now (Thornton), and with what I got overnight, I'm up to almost 2 inches now!. Boy, is everything ever green!) Here's a link to the Hibiscus info at Perennials.com. Thanks for the replies. I'm just going to quit obsessing (since they're already ordered!!) and plant them where I want them and see what they bring. I have decided it might be fun to try pegging them.

Another question for opinions: would Francois Juranville look good interspersed with BB? Growth habit similar? I have ordered him also.

How about Awakening? I have ordered A and FJ for two arbors, but could change my mind if they would fit in with the BB row.

My goal is a beautiful, long row of roses along the street-side.

I can't picture BB as any sort of twiny rose. It's canes while thin do not bend at all they just bow or arch. While untied they will bend over to the ground they can't be curled around anything.

It is a very upright rose well that's not quite right more of a huge arching plant.

I have Baltimore Belle (due in no small part to Jim's recommendation). It does appear to be very healthy and have a growth habit in every way as he says.

I (at present) am trying to grow this up a leg of an old swing set; it has its own opinion on the matter, and I'm now thinking of perhaps tying it on (in a sort of less restrained way) and seeing what happens then.

I train my BB over an arch in my rose tunnel. It is combined with silver fleece (or lace?) vine. I'm very pleased with the effect....also, Phyllis Bide is on the other side.

I grow my BB over a wrought iron arch that has a seat beneath it and the arch is so smothered in foliage and flowers when its blooming that its a secret hideaway!

I have mine trained up against a big copper trellis. I could easily imagine it on a chain link fence. It wants to grow big. I remove new canes a couple of times a summer just so I can walk past it.

The interesting thing is that although it is a once bloomer, here in my mild climate it can throw off a small scattering of roses a couple of times a summer. This always brings a smile to my face when it happens.

Thanks Rosefolly and Celestial Rose. Two pictures are worth two thousand words. Rosefolly's picture lets me see BB's true growth habit and Celestial Rose's picture is just yummy!

Where oh where is that rose order, anyway!?
