Birch tree vs. White poplar

I recently bought a house in Lawrence, KS and have in the yard a white barked tree, probably 70 ft tall, in my back yard. When I first saw it, there was lots of leaves on the upper branches. By the time I moved in, it had already dropped its leaves so I didn't get a chance to see the foliage. It stands alone at the top of a hill ... no apparent runners or suckers. The bark at the base is fairly dark and rough but the growth further up is smooth, white w/ dark striations. The bottom branches seem to be dying off.

I was thinking it might be a birch but a friend said it's probably a white or silver poplar.

Any clue on how to tell the difference?
