Relocating A 15yr old Pine?

Is it possible to pull out a 15yr old White Pine and install it somewhere else? I really hate to lose this tree but it is just in the wrong spot.

I see them in my neighborhood and the branches extend 40 ft and the tree towers 75ft up. It's such a beautiful tree!

Possible, but you need a real expert company to do it that has the proper equipment. I would just remove the tree and then buy one as large as you can afford to replace it--again, having the nursery you buy it from plant it for you and give you a guarantee. Much cheaper, and in the end you may have a better tree. In the picture I see that the top part doesn't seem to have the best form, which could make it susceptible to breakage under a heavy ice and snow load.

Would there even be enough room between the tree and deck to get a tree spade in there?

Simple, I'm so sorry to hear of your impending divorce... that really sucks! A new start is just what you need. I've been all up & down the east coast, from New England states all the way down to Key West. On the way back from a trip to Key West, I stopped in NC to visit a girl friend and never went home! After 33 years of living in Erie, PA, I moved to NC, near Charlotte area. I'm inbetween the mountains & the beach. Leaving my father was the hardest thing I've ever had to do and my only regret. I've never looked back. This is by far the best place I've been. The folks here are super, the living is more laid back than up north & gardening is a challenge but the climate is much better than the snow. There's plenty of jobs here for those who WANT to work. The BlueRidge parkway is the closest thing to heaven!! I used to be all about the water growing up on Lake Erie, but since being up on the BlueRidge.. forgit the water!!! The BlueRidge is heaven on earth! I'm happily married to #3 & we have horses, chickens, dogs & a rabbit. We aren't in the country as I would like to be, but I get by. Advisability of Planting White Pines

Hhhmmmm. I will be a devil's advocate and at least say to "be careful." I HAVE seen a number of dying and diseased white pines in the Balto/Washington area. Why...I cannot say. What else to use - I cannot say for certain either. In fact I'd come to the ye olde conifer forum tonight to do a Pam of Chesbay style post where I ask about a general area and what I'm trying to achieve with conifer plantings and asking whether what I have in mind is a good idea or not. I might put that off for a while. Mind you I agree the recommendation of Leylands was just trying to steer you toward something more profitable that is just as trouble prone if not more so. They are hated on these boards but I think they have their place. I am using about seven for a highly specialized screening application that is WELL away from my house. I am screening a hillside above my lot that is public land and I need something really fast to gain altitude to block the view from the hillside. Anything slower growing just won't work. The funny thing is I can hardly think of a conifer that ALWAYS looks good in our area. For all the problems people say they have, I don't see diseased leylands in my neck of the woods. Blue spruces can have terrible, hideous dieback - pollution perhaps? I think they are generally hideous looking in eastern gardens, period. I've seen gorgeous 30-40 yr. old Japanese cedars and twisty irregular specimens that look like something from a Dr. Seussian graveyard. I have a beautiful 50 year old Juniperus virginiana in my garden but some people would be turned off by the cedar apple rust. (on the plus side, this tree seems to be a cultivar with little winter color change) The scrubby pinus virginiana along roadsides has to be one of the north america's toughest conifers but even those can look very bedraggled, but that might just be road salt. I was never much of a spruce lover but I have 2 Picea abies in my garden - also 50 years old - that have converted me. Mind you I'm not wanting to plant more spruces, probably, I just love those 2 trees. I think conifers, _as a whole_ are more sensitive to the correct planting situation - exposure, soil, etc. - than most of the junk hardwoods people plant like maples. Heck maples and cockroaches will be all that's left one day.

Stacy, were you the one who asked for aloe vera? P'm pretty sure someone did, so I will bring it anyway. I had mentioned that I would like bleeding heart if you have any available. Jmzms, I will bring the hyacinth bean vine and the red cypress vine seedlings for you, but the butterfly bush and nicotiana have already been requested. Would you be interested in anything else on my list? I can bring you some little seedlings or the seeds for nymph salvia if you are interested in something for butterflies and hummingbirds, if that is what you are looking for. As for the cuttings, I'm no expert either, but I would suggest that you just make a cut about 4-6 inches or so from the tip of the branch below a leaf, and leave the other leaves on for the time being. You can just wrap them in a damp paper towel and put them in a plastic bag, should be fine that way for the day. I hope you are able to make it to the trade, but if you have to keep your other obligation we will certainly understand. Anne242 (Cathy)

shoot - thats true. There's no room to dig out between tree and deck. I may have no choice now. That stinks. Unless we dig what we can and yank it?

I might of..I dont remember getting replies if I did. I guess I'm really trying hard to keep it. The thing is, everyone in this area cuts down trees but doesn't plant new ones. It's starting to look so flat!

i remember that house..

you can do it.. resonable guess at cost.. 1000 to 1500 to 3500 dollars ...

you can get a replacement for 79 cents ... from the soil conservation district.. or about $10 from wally world ...

if you feel guilty.. replace it with 5 trees .. net earth .. plus 4 ...

seems like i told you that last time.. lol ....

it looks.. like you could do removal yourself.. rather safely .. for free ... wait a few more years.. and you will be spending 500 to 1000 $$$ to have it removed....

Have to agree with Spruceman, this tree isn't worth saving, with that multiple top (four competing leaders). The sort of branch system that disintegrates in gales or ice storms.

no problem at all .... surprised i remembered.. lol ...

it was the blue house that triggered the memory ... hey ... wait.. the house isnt blue anymore.... lol ...

are you handy enough to take it down for free???? pine is very soft ... get a great pruning saw .... climb up to the 4 leaders .... SAFELY cut those off ... while up there.. attach a good piece of rope .... climb down .... notch it in the direction you want it to fall ... get someone to grab rope on that side.. and start cutting from the other side.. while they begin to pull ... and have them safely guide the fall.. away from the deck ... THIS IS NOT A 'TIMBER' UNCONTROLLED FALL ...

if not within your ability.. hire someone to make it fall down ...

personally .. i would then add some retention block around the deck.. and backfill with good soil for a nice garden ... investing the money in the garden.. rather than paying to grind out the stump ... the stump will rot over time.. and probably provide years of mushroom entertainment ...
