Well Carla...I have never seen a bloom on my Uncle Joe (Toro).
This is his second year in my garden. Last year he produced one bud that never opened.

I try to ignore him when I walk past...it makes my blood pressure go up to see him
sitting there so smugly knowing how impatient I am!!

Hi Carla - how long has Lady E been in your garden? Do you think it was because of the cool spring? I had two on order from Regans this year but they were canceled due to crop failure. I was really disappointed; I wanted Emma pretty bad. I don't blame you for being impatient; I can't wait to hear how pretty she looks; please post pics.

Yes, I agree with terry. I would love to see Lady E in bloom. I just planted her bare root from DA. Looking forward to meeting her.

The one i ordered from DA this year was so tiny i was a little worried. No need, she is growing and blooming generously. Nicely fragrant too.

Prospero OTOH-talk about pokey-those buds take about a week to open.

I have a yard full of pokey buds. I keep going up to some of them and prying them open. Of course 40 degree weather doesn't help.

Terry and Artemis, I potted her because I was afraid to put her in the ground. I THINK someone had one die. I will post a bloom. If I could dig a hole here I would plant her. The ground is dry and hard! I got her from DA last year.
Sometimes I wonder if the bud is just going to go boing and fall off, laughing here.

I don't want to know. I found the dead rotting stub of LEH while I was potting up plants on Sunday. Sigh.

My LEH were so dead there was no need to worry about any opening buds last year when they came from DA. I received two Rose Edouard from Vintage last week that had opening buds on them in the box. So far I can smell the delicious scent but they are in no hurry to open even with the sepals already down.

Oh, on the other hand, Tea Clipper has leafed out nicely while soaking in the trash can. I need to get it into a pot some time this week. More leaves on one cane than LEH had in its entire short lifespan. Heavy sigh.

Get Robert Cappuci and Comtesse de Segur. Great alternatives to some of the weakly blooming Austins. Now, go ahead and bash, but Jim is going to be here to defend me. I love Austin's don't get me wrong but they are just not made for my climate except for 2-3.

LOL Patricia. You and Jim are welcome to grow those stingy HT's but not me sistah. Besides, if you were a friend you would know I don't need anymore roses. hehehehe :-)

Carla....there's nothing stingy about Comtesse de Segur. I have it and love it! I just walked out and looked at mine and it is covered with buds. Here's a pic from when I had a camera that worked.

Well, Carla, I am surprised that you do not like these roses after being totally smitten with them at Pat's personal garden and asking what she fed her roses to make the blooms so large.

These were the very two roses that had the large blooms, one a shrub and yes one listed as a HT (well I think they are both shrubs, because Robert does not grow like any HT I have ever had), but they are really much better plants and more prolific for me than any of my HTs or Austins.

I know my garden is a dud and because I am so far south, it has unique problems that gardens without the heat and humidity, rain and lack thereof, do not have. But as much as I love the Austins, I have much difficulty with them.

They seem to love Europe, New York and California, but, redneck that I am, I do the best I can.

I will have to take another look. And I know you probably remember much more than I :-). You know my mind has been elsewhere. I must admit that Comtesse de Segur, I believe, is one I wanted at one time and is gorgeous looking. Please pardon my stupidity, Ms. Pat.

Oh, no, I am so sorry The Doctor died. It is so lovely. I lost Milestone which I had wanted so long. It was in a bad location where the moles and voles have plundered since I do not have a "real" outdoor cat or "dog." I need to go to the pound and get myself a real cat and a real dog. These spoiled pets I have now do not even know what a field mouse is and Derry ran away from a rabbit this morning. Argh.

I think it was too near grass and voles ate it. It was doing fine with new growth and then pow! Oh my dogs don't catch anything except treats!
Maybe Comtesse to replace.

Oh, now Pat does fine in my garden, one of the few but she shatters before noon on a good day. I got another one and planted it in a hollyhock hoping it will shade this one. Hollyhock is a big hulking thing, black blooms.
