What will 34 degrees do to my rose buds?

I just heard on the radio that the low tonight will be 34. Is that going to hurt all of the buds I have on my roses? Will they still bloom?

34 should do any damage. Just make sure your roses are well hydrated.

Our low last night was 34 and I don't see any damage. I think it has to be as low as 28 for a number of hours before there is damage.

I think it depends on how exposed the bud is. The tighter and more wrapped they are, the less damage I see on mine. 34 is not too bad though.

Lauren just count yourself lucky--I had an inchworm in my salad once! The waitress offered to get me another salad, but the colleague I was at lunch with (who had quite the warped sense of humor) piped in with it probably came with brothers and sisters and lots of friends. I opted for soup.;) Baldo, thanks for the great link. That info has already come in handy. I noticed this foamy spit stuff on a couple of my roses and was wanting (hoping?) to blame the dog, but spit that stays for days at a time? Nope, Zephyr didn't cause THIS on the plants. This time (no his m.o. is to sit on them with all his 110+ pounds of blunk and smash them *g*). Thanks to your excellent bug info I now know the culprits--spittlebugs! I have no idea what they are either, but I swear I've seen them here also. They look like the critters that I'm apt to inhale when I sniff a bloom before looking for occupants first.

Rachel and Buford - thank you so much for replying - I have been so worried. Buford - I think you hit the nail on the head. While my roses were forming we had a pretty bad cold snap - a frost(some think it was a hard frost) as this group was forming buds. It is so widespread, and some are perfect - the newest ones forming. The leaves are completely undamaged as well. Rachel - I have heard of your thrip problem and it makes me sick to think of 300 roses being eaten by thrips. Do they run their course and then your roses recover? I cannot imagine what I would do. Florida has it's problems with so many invaders. Thank you two again - I could not find anything online about this problem last night - must be looking in the wrong places! Denise

Towandaaz: Looks like you have about the same amount of growth as I have. You've got some nice basals coming in. Our last frost date is May 8...aaaannddd...we are supposed to get snow this weekend! That's going to wreck havoc in the garden. Everything started leafing out in February. All the fruit trees bloomed a month ago. The garden looked like this yesterday, but I'm afraid what will happen this weekend. I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see like rabainsz7bpnw says. Let me know how your Geoff Hamilton does. I've appreciated the photos of this rose for a long time, but heard that it is a stingy bloomer. Altorama: The soil seemed to be pretty moist when I checked it. The drip lines are running fine. The roses under the maple seemed to be doing the best.

We dropped to 28 this morning, and were under 32 for 3 hours, and I see no damage on anything. I checked my Japanese maples, roses, tulips, magnolias, fruit trees, tall phlox, and everything tender has perked up again. The rose buds were very small, not full, so that may make a difference. Some of the roses were newly planted (just shipped in from Texas) and not really hardened off but I think they are fine also. Whew!

It will take at least a week for damage to show up. Sometimes longer than that.

Yes. The last cold snap we had, I think it went down to 26, I did see some droopy stuff the next morning. Then a few days later it got droopier, then shriveled then fell off.

So you have to wait and see.

What is the temp during the day?

Yes, they will still bloom. Welcome to my world. You'll have to be under 28 degrees for more than a few hours for any real damage to occur.

34F should not cause any damage at all.

34 celcius on the other hand would be like 96F.
