You should be okay doing it now. Heucheras are one of the few things I don't move/divide in the fall. They are so bad for heaving during the winter, that I prefer to do it in the spring so they have the full season to get their roots established. If you keep them watered and shaded, they should be fine.

Are they easy to divide? How small a portion should I make? Would you divide into more than two sections?

Very easy to divide...you can pretty well break it off into pieces. I'm trying to fill a LOT of space in my gardens, so when I divide, I tend to go for a lot of small divisions, and that's easy to do with heuchera. As long as there are roots on the section, it's not too small, in my experience :) So, it's your choice if you want two larger sections, or if you want to wait longer for small divisions to fill in a large area. Me, I'm patient and cheap, lol! Depending on how big it's grown this season, the leaves may wilt and look like you did a really bad thing. Don't be alarmed, it will send up new leaves. Just keep them watered, and you'll be fine! Which variety are you dividing?

I have Stormy Seas and Green Spice that I wanted to increase. They were nothing special the first year, but this is their second year and they look great! I am like you patient and cheap too..lol. I have a specific area that I am trying to fill in under a Japanese Maple and I just love the dark foliaged silvery markings of the heucheras with them. The green spice is green but has maroon markings on the veins of the leaves. I am planning on adding some Japanese painted ferns with them too.

Ow, wow...are you trying to make me spend money??? I just googled your heucheras, and especially LOVE green spice. Don't know how I've never seen it before, but I can see I'm gonna have to have it!! The combination you're talking about is going to be just stunning!

LOL...well you might as well join the club! Someone just posted that Bluestone Perennials is having a 1/2 off sale and I ordered some Plum Pudding Heucheras and a Quicksilver Heucherella to add to the other two I have. Plus a Bressingham Ruby Bergenia that has gorgeous dark foliage too. Sorry I didn't see any other Heucheras that interested me and not the two I have either. I have not tried Heucherellas yet as I have heard they are more demanding, but I fell in love with the Quicksilver and for 1/2 off I can give it a try and see how it does. I have been eyeing that Plum Pudding for a few years now. I am always late to the party and I am sure Plum Pudding is an old variety by this time. lol Now if it will just not get too hot too soon so I can get them all in the ground. I hope it will look well together but anything will look better than what is there now. Mulch, and dying crocus foliage and one lone Purple Palace Heuchera. [g]

Here are my two Heucheras. Now that I look at the Green Spice it might be too small to divide but the Stormy Seas? looks like I could get at least two divisions out of it. I might be identifying that one wrong. I know I bought a few the summer before last and don't remember which is which. That 2nd photo..looks like I need a nice dark mulch around it.

I have had mixed results with dividing heuchera's. My very first heuchera, Montrose Ruby, was great...multiplied like rabbits. Still giving it away... not crazy about it's color now, but it is strong. Its kinda middle of the road color-wise... not purple, not green, too much sun and it burns, too much shade and its muddy. But a good grower.

But other heucheras haven't always been as vigorous. I've had mysterious losses from time to time, so I am a bit more conservative in dividing Heucheras now.

Dividing! I'm just thrilled when I can get heuchera through the winter here. Except for the plain old green one, that one gets huge and never seems to winter kill. Wish I could say the same for the newer hybrids I've tried. Frosted violet is the only one of those still around. Oh and Lime Rickey is making a feeble attempt to return.

The only ones I've had a hard time with are Amber Waves and another of the orangey colored ones..the name escapes me at the moment. Peach Melba or something like that. However, Palace Purple, Plum Pudding and June Bride have all been divided within an inch of their life. June Bride and Plum Pudding are in pretty much full sun and keep plugging right along. As a matter of fact, June Bride is in a spot that Centaurea Montana refused to grow for me...go figure, some days things just don't make sense ;)
