To get your grafting stock you need to clip the tops now. you want growth that occurred last year. Put that in the fridge with a damp paper towel. Don't forget to mark it. Don't cut the tree off yet. once buds are opening on other trees cut these off and graft to the stump. (you can't keep the scions long enough to wait for a graftable size sucker, although I guess if you have enough clippings you can try it as a backup) So you are going to cleft graft into the stump. You will need to cut into some good cambium. If it is chewwed right at the ground dig down a bit to expose some workable bark/cambium. That would not be ideal but it is your only option at this point. read and watch youtube on cleft grafts. let me add that many of the grafts on youtube are done by first time grafters and many probably fail, so look for the videos from the professionals. One detail commonly not made clear enough is the length if the connection. If you have it, you need more then and inch of contact length. Keep us posted on it

My experience with Peter Rabbit is that there is a bite, not a nibble. It also appears to be less tender than what my Peter Rabbit would prefer. Peter has nibbled on my green beans, topped two dill plants, topped one of my okra and, of course the peas and lettuce. Nothing as dense as a cuke.

are these those plants that should not be named.. lol ... yeah .. is see the wings .... it looks much more efficient in bark removal... as compared to my rabbit damage ... which seemed to be more of a tearing.. and leaving lots of stuff there, while totally girdling the plant .... rather than the clean white wood ... i dont know how a rabbit got thru that small netting... and as i told you.. i was not aware.. of rabbits burrowing under snow... to do damage.. as you said you had something like 300 feet of snow this year ... ALL MY RABBITS DAMAGE IS NOW 3 FEET ABOVE GROUND .... and that was the level of the snow ... also ... i would bet my shiny nickle that these plants.. if they were not grafted [and who would] .. will return .... but it might take them a few months to bud out and get a move on ... which would only leaves us.. with what they are ... lol ... if they do return.. you might want to think about all your fencing and what not ... i think its really overkill on protection.. on some level.. and if these survive.. maybe you will come to think about how much protection they really need ... continued luck with your collection ... ken ps: tell hubby.. this is what gardening is all about ... no one beats mother nature.. if she so wishes to mess with us .... there is no way to win.. all the time... and he needs to go a bit zen.. on when she does win .... i mean really ... if it wasnt the snow.. and it wasnt the severe temps.. then its the rodents.. and the vermin.. and then the bugs.. and then the hail ... etc ... at some point ... you have to learn to just shrug.. and laugh ... and keep in mind.. anything destroyed.. is a space.. for something new ...

well, i'm in Iowa. not sure if that helps. if it were a grasshopper or caterpillar, wouldn't there actually be pieces missing, though? this looks like there are little flaps still attached to one end of the hole... also didn't notice earlier, but whatever it is also ate part of a small cholla-style cactus. had 3 segments growing in a pot, one isn't in there anymore, and a little piece with roots attached was laying on the ground next to the pot.
