Requesting comments on my new selections

I decided to move this to it's own 'posting' since I am asking for comments on my new May garden:

Regan's is my favorite nursery in the world. The first rose I purchased there about 25 years ago was (this is a repeat) a Pristine rose tree. It was my mother's favorite.
Last year was my first year with a small rose garden. And Pristine was my first purchase in honor of my mother. (gone now for 5 years) Pristine is a jewell.
It was suggested to me by the Forum Folks that instead
of putting in a raised garden over a cement patio, that I remove some of the patio and plant a new garden directly in the ground. I will be doing that next month.
My new babies will be:

Veteran's Honor
St. Patrick
Francis Meilland
Marilyn Monroe
Pope John Paul II
Midas Touch
Stainless Steel
and my newest love, Crimson Bouquet.

I live in the SF Bay Delta area. Zone 9B.

I also live in the SF Bay Area Delta. I have 3 on your list, but Francis is just a bareroot. Veteran's Honor has beautiful albeit non-fragrant blooms - but they are blood red and stunning. Stainless Steel is a heart throb for me - I love the ghostly color, the form and the fragrance.

I've seen the rest on your list, and you'll be very happy!

Excellent list. You will be happy with those. I think the only change I would make if I were doing that would be I would prefer the white hybrid tea Sugar Moon to the Pope. Better vigor and better fragrance. Otherwise, great list.

Ganesh, The term "various sources" means that you want compost that is created from different things, such as: mushroom compost (based on mushrooms as the main ingredient), then cow compost (based on cow manure as the main ingredient). Mel suggests that you use five different types of compost. In my first SFG, I used mushroom, horse, cow and some homemade compost. I firmly believe homemade is the best because you add so many different ingredients. I've added both kangaroo and chicken manure to my compost barrel, along with horse poo (from horses riding down the street).

anyways, i just got all this stuff (the electrolux fridge not samsung) from plessers. Gene was a really nice guy to work with and the price i received was 10% less than the local store here after considering no tax, no shipping fee, and a good bit less per appliance. it should all arrive in 2-3 weeks, i will post up my thoughts. oh and i did go with the viking internal blower 600 cfm. they gave me a good price on it, and if i need more i can always wire in a 2nd fantech inline blower down the line somewhere... now how to get rid of all the existing appliances ... perhaps craiglist it ? The fridge is almost new and so is the dishwasher. the rest of it is circa 1987, but works really well. maybe good for a local meth lab ...

I've given this a lot of thought and I just can't warm up to idea of the sink on the peninsula and losing space with a counter overhang in what's already a small dining room. I much prefer the sink on the outside wall. We need to keep the office closet and the shower because this is our "aging in place" house, and at some point we might need a downstairs bedroom. This morning our architect and his assistant crawled under the house to take the structural measurements and see what would be possible. There's a city requirement that the garage must be at least 9'x20' which has complicated things a bit because our original plan was eating into the 20' length. The stairs are a limiting factor as well. The new plan is this: steal up to 18 inches from the current furnace/water heater area to allow for cabinets to be recessed, and steal even more from the garage to have space for the fridge. With fridge/cabinets set into the back wall, that gives us 12 feet to work with for the rest of the room. The math so far is: 26" sink/window cabinets 36" aisle 36" island 46" aisle --- 12' The bad news is that there's no room for a double oven, so I've switched the cooktop to a range. The furnace gets moved to the spot just to the left of the door from the hall to the kitchen. We'll have a smaller furnace there because we're going to heat the upstairs from a 2nd furnace in the attic. The plans: The first tall cabinet unit will have to be shallower on top because it's limited by the stairs. The windows can't be centered on the back wall because the new office will come 3 feet into the end of the kitchen. I put in a few more uppers. The island will just be 2 cabinets with a 12" overhang, but I drew it as 4 to get the dimensions right. Maybe I can add another 12" set of drawers on the stove end. Comments welcome!

Half of the existing patio slab is going to be completely removed because it's badly cracked, including the entire raised area were the hot tub used to be. Any remaining portion will be cut back to accommodate an appropriate footer. Completely new slab with monolithic pour onto of any existing slab to bring everything up to the height of the existing house slab (so there is no step down into the new room) As far as the bathroom goes, there is absolutely no other place to put it but somewhere on that exterior wall (because of the lot layout) No location on that wall is going to have an impact on angles to tap into an existing drain location or to a main line. So if the floor has to be raised to get enough slope, that's what is going to have to be done. We have no issue with it, should it need to be done.

Oh thank you for your kind comments harmonyp. I am sure that the Francis M. is now available in container, because that's what I ordered.

I am also happy to hear about Stainless Steel. It looks fantastic online. I am so excited I can barely stand it.

I only hope that my new garden will be as beautiful and healthy as the one I planted last summer. I have arranged to have Victoria (my favorite rosarian from Regan's Nursery) to come as a consultant and give me her opinions on my existing and future beds.

The only one I would double think about is Marilyn Monroe. It tends to be a stingy, twiggy, sideways grower that is packed full of nasty thorns. Everything else you have will keep you happy. Have you looked at Gold Medal?? I hear it loves the San. Fran. area.

'Marilyn Monroe' is not stingy here, but the thorns are indeed some of the nastiest I've ever been slashed, torn, and stabbed with and they are plentiful right up to the base of the flower. Also she Rusts pretty badly. The flowers, however are exquisite.

I have Marilyn Monroe, Crimson Bouquet, Midas Touch, and Veteran's Honor. I've had St. Patrick. All winners. They all take the heat. My Francis Meilland is still too young to judge. I think you will be happy with these.
