How to fix planting error

Five years ago I paid a landscape contractor to plant 50 trees in my yard. Most have flourished, but they planted three columnar norway maples in my lawn that just did not take off. I assumed soil compaction in heavy clay was the culprit. When one of them died halfway to the ground, I decided to cut it down and investigate. To my shock and dismay, I found that the root ball was still wrapped in plastic! Must have been a Friday and the boys were in a hurry. One tree down and two to go, and I am looking for a solution. Is there any, or should I just remove them and start over? I have considered pummeling the contractor (with words of course) to make me feel better, but that doesn't help the two remaining trees.
