Grandmother's Hat - I've finally caved in

I think Jeri's picture of a vaseful of this rose gave the death knell to my firm resolution not to order any more roses, and certainly no more this year. Thank you very much, Jeri!

I ordered from Vintage and of course it is, as we all know, impossible to order just one rose. Besides, we must support our old rose nurseries. I additionally ordered Le Vesuve, Mme. Louis Leveque and Marie van Houtte. Alternates were Salet and Mme. Charles.

If anyone has positive (or negative) comments about my choices I'd love to hear from you. I can always change my order (except of course for Grandmother's Hat) if there are better suggestions from anyone.

Ingrid, Le Vesuve and MvH are excellent for me, here at the coast.
You may find LeVesuve a little mildewy for the first couple of years, until it establishes itself.
I keep ah open area near its base, so that the dogs can run through there, without becoming impaled.

And THANK YOU for supporting Vintage. We really DO need to support our nurseries!

Look like great choices to me. I have Grandmother's Hat, which is wonderful beyond words. Marie van Houtte is great here, and I have wanted Le Vesuve and Mme. Charles for a while, maybe in a year or two.

That she is Florence, and she remains one of my all time favorites of his offerings. Partly due to the person the rose is named for and partly due to the rose itself. I've always loved how the stamen and anthers darken in my climate which results in the flowers appearing to wear mascara. And, I love the scent. It's just too large and too prone to mildew here for such a scant spring bloom. The combination of our "winter chill" (or lack thereof) and the intensity of our summer heat work to limit her flowering. But, yes, that photo encouraged many of us to give her a try. My newest bands are Grandmother's Hat and Le Vesuve and these twiglets are braving 125-degree heat in their full-sun location and that alone merits admiration. I don't know whether they'll bloom this year although I suspect they may, but I agree watching them grow and prosper over the years brings its own kind of pleasure, just as putting a 5-gallon plant in the ground and watching it bloom right away is a thrill of its own. I love hearing how little plants that seemed iffy have turned out wonderfully in their third year. Having something to look forward to can be so satisfying and Grandmother's Hat is a rose surrounded by so much mystique and admiration that I'm looking forward to being bowled over by this rose. Yes. She is an extraordinary rose. So much so that it seems inexplicable that she should have been so completely forgotten. Fred Boutin said that, when he found her in the San Gabriel Valley in ?1979?, he called it "Altadena Drive Pink HP." He said that he didn't bother to give it a memorable study name, because " . . . it was so good, I was sure we would identify it very quickly." Only, of course, it was NOT identified quickly. And then, Barbara Worl found it in the Bay Area, and called it "Grandmother's Hat". And then a good many other people found it in other parts of the Bay Area (we even found it on Mare Island) and a certain San Jose nurseryman decided to rename it "Barbara Worl". But we STILL don't really know what it is!

Well, because of the heat wave (record-breaking temps in S.F.), I didn't feel much like working out of doors today! However, with this rare blast of heat in my chilly garden, I can practically see my roses growing as I watch. Thank you all for your comments. I still can't seem to make a decision about what to put where. I've been thinking of putting Maggie next to Buff Beauty. I'm now wishing I'd placed Grandmother's Hat closer to Buff Beauty and might then place WR Smith on her right. (I'm thinking just now mostly in terms of color and contrast.) I forgot to mention that I also have Dd Brabant, another possibility, but I think for now I'm going to keep the teas in containers. The real problem is that my garden space is so very very small. At this point, I have to hope that my roses don't grow very fast. Also, I'd read today that WR Smith is OK with being cut back to limit his size. Ingrid, do you find W.R. Smith to be very fragrant? I've read contrasting notes about that on HMF. And I do like Lady Ann Kidwell. I can live with the nodding. Because of the limitations on my space and my climate, I am just overjoyed if my roses bloom! I tolerate a lot of things that make others SP a rose. For instance, we have rampant black spot here. And a lot of hungry rose slug action. So I often have a lot of pretty sad looking foliage. But -- the plants keep refoliating and seem overall healthy, so I just don't let it bother me. Jeri, I bought Grandmother's Hat last fall, all because of you, and am I ever glad! She is doing GREAT for me. She shot up to @ 5 feet very quickly, has had two lovely flushes thus far and is about to have another. She's been growing like mad this past month and has many new shoots and fat buds. Thank you so much for bringing her to my attention. Another fan here. Buff Beauty is growing in front of the chain link fence. She's really putting out some growth right now. She's my oldest rose in the ground -- I think it's 4 years now. It took til this year for her to finally take off, and I had my first wonderful flushes of blooms. So far no giant canes, and she's pretty stiff, but I will run her along the fence if possible. I love this rose. Vaporvac, was Maggie slow to bloom for you? I've been reading that she may not bloom for a long time, until she's reached most of her height. Also, I'd read that she is fairly shade-tolerant, so you may not need to give her your best sun, if that's in short supply, as it is for me. Ingrid, I guess we will both enjoy Grandmother's Hat. I really like the name too. Mine came from Vintage also. I love the west coast vendors!

What fun Carla. Since you already have yours you'll have to post pictures when it blooms so I'll know what to expect from my band. It sounds as though it's a large, sturdy rose which I hope will translate into lots of blooms. I can't wait. I have not heard one negative thing about this rose, only many rave reviews.

After running around my place like a crazy person this morning trying to find a place for four monster roses somewhere close to the house, I've revised my rose list. It's now GH, Le Vesuve, Salet and Singe Cerise China (the last again thanks to Jeri's enabling skills). The alternates are Indigo and Mme. Charles. My question now is whether anyone has grow Salet in the southwest and what its ultimate size is expected to be. I decided against Mme. Louis Leveque not only because of her larger size but also because of reports on the forum of sparse to non-repeat blooming. At any rate, I'd so appreciate hearing from anyone who has grown Salet and can tell me all about this rose.

I grow Salet in the Bay Area in zone 10. It is now about 2 years in the ground from a band. It is 3 1/2 feet high and about 3 feet wide. I love its foliage as well as the blooms. It has a softness about it, especially the blooms, but the whole plant as well. The fragrance is outstanding and the bloom form very appealing. I think this rose would work well anywhere, but definitely in a smaller garden. So far, it does not appear to be a monster rose.

I grew three grafted Salets no-spray in Ojai, California. They were neat, sweet and floriferous, very healthy--about 3-4' tall and wide.

Just -- Y'all should keep in mind, I think it can blackspot, where that is a problem.
That doesn't happen here -- but blackspot isn't one of our major problems -- and it does NOT suffer from mildew or rust.

Ingrid, it has gotten rather tall in it's pot. It will go in the ground this year, if I can dig a hole!

Thanks so much for the replies on Salet. Three to four feet and maybe a bit more sounds very workable. Joanne and Colleen, your comments make me glad I ordered this rose, it sounds very pretty. Carla, I'd love to see pictures of your Salet.

I'm very excited about these roses, I think they're all going to be wonderful.

Thanks Jeri....that is one gorgeous rose!

I had thought of buying two..one for me and another as a birthday gift for a girl I work with. Blackspot doesn't bother me much, I'll spray if need be. I do plan on using Good Health Roses this year so this could be a good test. I'm headed out Monday afternoon to buy my first bottle.

I'm just not sure about my friend though. I need to find her something pretty bulletproof. I'm trying to show her that there is a better way than HT's.
