model 40h777 code 050120y0 type 0241 E1 22 hp Briggs

Problem The motor won't start without a quick shot of starter fluid. Once running it runs long and strong. After a cool down same thing it needs a shot of starter fluid.

I have put in fresh fuel.

Checked spark and plugs.

I pulled the carb off and sprayed cleaner (I did not rebuild)

Is there a way to check fuel pump or backfire solenoid?

Does anybody have any suggestions?

chk throttle linkage at carb to verify choke is engaged when throttle/choke control at dash is activated.

I agree with rcbe, sounds like it is choke related. Forget any suspicions you might have about fuel pump or afterfire solenoid, neither of those components would yield the symptoms you describe. If it was either of those, you would not be able to achieve start-up at all (except for a second or 2 until the starting fluid was consumed).

I recommend using a NGK BKR5EIX pt. # 6341 spark plug . IT will last 8 - 10 years depending on the hours per week it is used, commercially a good 5-6 years . The other problem is the fuel filter. An in line filter like a NAPA 3012 will filter out the the trash that the factory screen filter allows to get to the carburator. The carburator is another problem as water gets is the gas much quicker . Take bowl loose with a long pair of needle nose pliers & clean if bowl leaks gas may need to get the 2 gaskets to bowl. Make sure you have your model # . Fuel is another issue as there is more alcohol in gas these days . Premium gas may help if you don't use daily BUT the product that I have found that works best to disperse water in gas is REDLINE SL-1 fuel additive. 1 ounce per gallon will make the alcohol & water disapear. Exception to this would be when you see water on the bottom of the tank . In this case drain the tank first before cleaning the bowl of Carburator . Just a reminder to never leave the switch on when the motor is not running . Most 14.5 B & S have an electric switch that allows fuel to go through carburator when switch is on. If that does not fix your problems you have a spark issue , a valve clearence adujst hot or cold ? or broken connecting rod . Mechanical issues should be taken to a specialist !

Well, won't start??? don't tell us much??? How about does it have spark??? You need to get pass this one before going on???? does it have compression??? need to get pass this one next (push rods in righ hole and adjusted so the valves are closing, or not opening the valve enough or at the right time with too much lash?? Is it getting gas??? does it backfire when it turns over fast enough to start??? Are the spark plugs wet with gas??? Have you Primed it with carb. cleaner either by removing the plugs or by squirting it down the carb. and trying to start it. Does it do anything????? My best guess would be a timing issue or a compression issue once you pass spark?

Most likely thing is the valves need adjusting, very common on OHV B&S engines. Compression Release works off Intake Valve, excessive clearance prevents Compression Release from working properly. For detailed instructions on adjusting, wconner5 at verizon dot net put in proper format. Walt Conner

Briggs 18HP 422707 Won't start

Look at the photo below. This is on my 422707 in an old Huskee garden tractor. This is the "kill wire" junction provided by Briggs. The wire that disappears under the shroud (wire on right) leads back to the coil. The wire on the left is called the "kill wire extension circuit" and leads to key switch (at least it does on my tractor) to kill the spark when the key is turned off (it also connects up to the seat switch circuit). Your walk behind may have some different safety switches but this basic junction block should be the same or similar. Take the wire (or wires) loose from the junction except the wire that leads back to the coil, leave that wire in place. A word of caution here.....with the kill wire extension removed, you will have to reconnect it or touch it to a metal surface to kill the engine if it starts. OK, with the kill wire extension loose, crank the engine and check for spark. If you get spark now, the kill wire extension might have a chafed, bared spot that is grounding the kill wire and the coil. Grounding the kill wire circuit is the Briggs way to stop the spark and kill the engine. If you don't find a bad place in the kill circuit, check any safety switches for defects.

I just checked the choke and it seems to be working fine. I just ran it for about 10 min to warm it up, turned it off and it wouldn't start. So it won't even start when it's warm.

how did you check plug/spark when it won't start ?

I grounded each plug to the block and cranked the motor.

you should have seen a bright blue spark... and that has to be done right at the time the engine wont' start... such will detect probs in the ignition circuit, such as weak coil when engine is hot. A yellowish spark indicates problems.

Also make sure engine cooling fins are clean - rodents. etc. love to winter over in such spots. Remove engine xhroud sheet metal to ck - also closely check ignition leads for any mouse chewing damage... they like insulation.

Also remove carb air cleaner and observe correct choke plate movement when /choke throttle control is activated.

Does they starter crank the engine briskly while it won't start ?

It's funny how things change. My neighbor said the motor was only firing on one cylinder. To make a long story short, the starting problem was a bad plug on one side and a bent push rod on the other. The valve is moving freely so I got a new push rod and will put it in later on tonight. What will go wrong next?

That push rod bent for a reason. Generally the valve is sticking OR the valve guide has worked up to where it hits the valve spring retainer. Valve guide working up usually is caused by a cooling problem, cooling shroud, cooling fins plugged.

IF this would be the problem, B&S says the head has to be replaced. I do have a fix for it. I also have instructions for adjusting the valves.

The fix is for loose Valve guide which MAY be the cause of bent push rod. Too long for here. Address below, put in proper format.

Walt could to much lash or the valve adjuster working loose cause the valve stem to eventually get bent? It may of just worked so loose over time that it started hitting the piston?? just an thought?

I don't follow that. IF the adjustment got very loose, the valve would travel LESS distance into the cylinder and be less likely to be hit by the piston.

It was the push rod that was bent anyway??
