Litmus paper pH test results -- accurate?

fabaceae_native

Just got done testing the pH of various things with regular litmus paper from the pharmacy, and was wondering how accurate my results seem to all of you.

My tap water tested neutral so my method was to wet the sample material to a soupy consistency in order to test with the strip. I will also try leaving some overnight to see if they change with time. I've always assumed soils here were alkaline, but this shows the parent material to be neutral (as well as the tap water, and the scoria I've collected to amend the clay soils). Is this news simply too good to be true?

Thanks for any input...

My results:

urine: 6

peat: 6

garden soil: 6.5

tap water: 7

bare mineral soil: 7

black scoria: 7

softwood ashes: 9
