Growth Habit of Pink vs. Red (Radrazz) Knockouts

Just curious if you have found any difference in the growth habit of the pink versus the red (Radrazz) Knockout roses. Mine are pink and grow unbelievably fast a get a little too leggy for my tastes. Seems like I'm constantly cutting the tall shoots back. The many red/Radrazz varieties that I see around me in both commercial and residential landscapes seem to be a little more dense and compact than mine and lack the "shooters'. Any thought, opinions, or advice? Thank you.

I used to do the same thing with my red knockouts. I could not stand those tall shoots here and there and finally I planted mine closer together and now the long shoots aren't as noticeable since there are more of them closer together. Make any sense? I hated them at first and after I planted them closer I love them!!! My pink ones seem to do the same just not as bad I think. My pink don't seem to get as tall either but I haven't had them as long either. I hope this helps a little. Judy

No difference in my garden. Both grow fast and bloom the same for me..

I had the sunny and the red knockout but they both died on me due to where they were planted in the garden. What happened was the black rubber pipe they had sim to the eaves trough had it placed so that whenever it rained really hard it would come down off the roof and into not only the ditch but into the garden and flood part of it out as it was like a moat. I wasn't aware of it at the time doing this and due to the constant freezing and thawing as well the roses eventually died on me. The first knockout I got was in this one garden but the sawfly larvae that was on the mini rose came over on to mine and did a number on it. Soooo moved it to the other garden was doing ok but then once the hostas got going and nobody actually looked after the garden letting them go wild they were overshadowing it. Move hah #3. Phoned my garden center where I got it from asked if it was okay to move it for a 3rd time and they assured me it was and just after I do to give it this quick start once every week for the next 3 weeks to help with the transplanting of it. And it has been there ever since. The tenacious rose proved to me it was going to pull through no matter what. And despite the size of it got a bloom or two on it!!! Never got around to covering any of them up last year. And it still survived. You should see it now!!!! Wow!!! Has gotten higher and has developed 4 buds on it. One of them has opened up today on it. Seems to like it there.

What is up with these knockouts?

I did not use hedgeclippers and did not use standard deadheading technique (trimming down to the 5 leaf area). I did use clippers but cut off only the bloom, leaving the stem. In some cases, I snapped them with my hands, but I was hitting too many thorns, so I mostly used the clippers. The weird thing is that the bushes that are reblooming were also deadheaded all at once after their initial flush - they just seem to be quicker about getting new growth (and now, of course, they are being deadheaded slowly and steadily as they bloom). They were planted a good week or two after the first roses were deadheaded, and have been reblooming ever since. Maybe the other ones will just catch up once they've had a chance to settle in and grow some roots. Who knows - maybe the second batch was fertilized more in the greenhouses or something. (Actually, I do think they've used something on those, because I keep picking dead beetles off the blooms of those 2nd batch of plants, and I've never used any pesticide on them at all.....

Knockout vs Double Knockout?

You might need a chain saw instead of a hedge trimmer. I am not kidding! Keep in mind that Knockout has some pretty lethal thorns. They can shred thick leather gloves. If you have more than a few, it can be very hard to keep up with grooming them. They are disease resistant, but they ARE NOT disease or pest free. Both regular Knockout and Double Knockout have their own charm. Double Knockout has prettier blooms, in my opinion, and they are brighter. I once had 53 regular Knockouts and currently have 3 Double Knockouts. ALL the regular Knockouts have been removed and replaced with various china and tea roses. One of my mass plantings now consists of Archduke Charles. He is wonderful, and his thorns are reasonable. He is also much more disease and pest free. I don't know if you live in an area where you can grow china roses, but it is worth checking them out. Last spring (2006) I was badly cut up from pruning Knockouts, despite wearing protection. I mean dangerously cut up. I have decided to remove the three Double Knockouts near my walkway. They are somewhat grungy looking and need to be groomed, but I do not want to get near them to take care of them because of the thorns. They also have a stiff habit of growth to them. Rouge Cardinal Bloom Habits and Season?

I have no experience with Ernest Markham but I have Rouge Cardinal. Mine is blooming now, and has been for about a week, this year everything is late so you can figure a bloom in mid June. The flowers are primarily at the top growth of my plant, but the way it is connected to the trellis it looks as if they cover the plant. The one I have is three years old, I have had problems with blight after the first flush of bloom, but I don't think that this has as much to do with the particular plant as is does with my garden and situation as I have not heard of it being exceptionaly incline to the problem. The color is much more purple-red than the picture on the tags or web indicate. It tends to have a really good first flush of blooms and then the flowering is spuradic rather than constant. Are does Double KO or just the regular ones?

Do you need to dead head all those blooms or they just fall off?

I am thinking of getting a Double Pink KO for the front of the house.

these are original not double knockout.i have seen the double and have one in the front of my house but really like these better. The flower is bigger and the bush is bigger then double knockout. I dead head from time to time as I walk past them but try to space out the timing and only do a few at a time. Never could deadhead all.. You do not have to do this as they will still bloom without this step but I feel they rebloom faster if I do..Might just be me...I don't like the looks of tons of dead flowers on the bush either so I do a few a day.. You do not have to....

What kind of red is it? Bluish red or ? Ditto on the questions about how close they are planted and/or advice about that. Is there a yellow or white KO yet?

Knock Out (the original) is a bright cherry red, bluish not orange.

There is a yellow, Sunny Knock Out, it is new this year. I have seen them available at a local nursery (and will probably see more tomorrow), but I have not seen one in bloom. I have heard that the old blooms fade to white. I don't know anything about size.

There is also Carefree Sunshine from the same hybridizer (Bill Radler) as Knock Out.

No white yet.
