I purchased it at a local furniture store. I had to add the center extensions on the top. This gets it out of the way of my 6 foot gate. I painted it with Rustoleum spray paint.

cj, I always think a trellis design complete with the type of materials used should be determined by the surroundings and whether it is to be free standing or not. Then you kind of get the curved vs straight feel and pick the materials accordingly. I'm up to almost 20 climbers now between fences and trellis' of various types. I've done some that are solid copper, some that are a combination of copper and cedar, some that are a combo of treated 4x4 and lattice. Treated lumber w/ cedar gets you 10 years minimum. Copper and rebar get you almost forever. Each time I build one I like to try and make it unique. I'm getting ready to do one for my niece that wraps around the end of the deck I built her last year. I need to give her back the privacy she lost with the deck being so much higher. I'm thinking of designing a combo painted wire mesh and cedar.

Living in cold Sweden I ought to have more hardy Kordes roses but I have very few. But then I have few modern roses at all. My favourites are FrÃÂ¼hlingsduft, Raubritter and my newest favourite, RotkÃÂ¤ppchen (Red Riding Hood) introduced in 2007. I managed to catch three of my Kordes roses in one photo (a bad one I'm afraid, as my camera doesn't like red). The climber Flammentanz (Flame Dance) came with the house, there is a glimpse of Iceberg to the left behind the box hedge and three RotkÃÂ¤ppchen, in front, red with oldfashioned form. The distances are all wrong, the house is at least 10 metres away.

I planted TG last year and I have to say she only had one bloom last year. This year she has lots of blooms on her first flush. She will be having her second flush soon. I love her blooms, fragrance and abundance of blooms but the colour is too soft for my garden. It doesn't stand out at all. It wash out quickly in the hot sun. I just planted Rosarium this spring and mine doesn't seem to grow much. I guess it needs time to get establish. I usually don't worry about first year plants since I know that it takes time to settle and grow. My only concern for first year plants is that they grow strong and survive the first winter. This is always tricky since you never know if the variety is really hardy in your zone.

Any reason why you've selected only those varieties for use? I've seen RU in bloom at another garden and it was jaw dropping beautiful, but I'm not sure about rebloom. Since it is close to an entryway, I'd ask about thorns too.

When Eden blooms, it is jaw-dropping beautiful, but a number of posters have claimed they have trouble getting it to re-bloom. Mine re-blooms, but not heavily, like the spring bloom.

The canes on my Eden are kinda thick and stiff--don't bend around that easily. Maybe if I started working with the canes when they are younger and more flexible, that would be less of a problem, but I nearly despair of getting my mature Eden to wind where I want it to go.

My Eden is maybe 10-12 ft tall.

Maryl has a good suggestion--you might not want heavy thorns around an entryway.

RU is a difficult color to pair with other roses. I don't grow it for this reason. I hope someone will answer who grows all three.

I agree that Eden has thick canes, mine is rather shrubby but I chose to grow that way, so if you want it to be a climber try training it till you have young pliable canes.

Is your area is too cold for Noisettes?

Here are photos of two RU's, one on each pillar. The pillars are 7ft tall. These were second year bare-roots last summer when I took these photos. Absolutely gorgeous!
I had some modest winter dieback this spring. But, I am expecting they'll be even better this year.

I had very good rebloom here in Zone 6.

Eden is slow, but two would cover that arch IMO, and given a few years, it does rebloom, although not spectacularly as it does in spring. I would be more concerned with blackspot than anything else. Did you check with Antique Rose Emporium or Chamblee's as to suggestions? They are both in Texas and could give you climate-specific advice based on your willingness to spray fungicides (or not).

That is 1 heck of a nice archway!

I'd go with RU on one side and forget about either Eden or Dortmund. Pair 'Laguna' with RU instead.

To the morden man, thanks for recommending Laguna. I looked at it and love it. I like your suggestion about using it along with Rosarium Uetersen. It appears that the suppliers I have checked with are out of it (or do not grow it). Pickerings web site says they are out. I called and they said they may have 2 or 3 left but they were not sure. So I may be able to get it from them. I checked with Roses Unlimited, Chammblee, Antique Rose Emporium and all were out or did not grow it.

Ceterum I looked at some of the Noisettes. I do think they would work. However, my wife loves roses that have big full flowers. This is one reason I have been looking at RU and Eden. From what I understand about Noisette's they have small flowers, but I may try Madame A. Carriere on one side and Laguna on the other.

Madame would be too big for one side of that arbor. I think there are Noisettes that have big flowers, at least I hope so, check out Reve d'Or (I just planted one) but I am not sure that it would not clash with Laguna. On the other hand, based on a few photos I saw of RU, that rose would clash even more, LOL! with Laguna.

Olivia, beautiful, beautiful pictures! How old is your Eden? I planted mine about 3 months ago, have only had 3 blooms on it as yet, but they were absolutely beautiful. What is the light purple plant on the side? Is it a clematis?

I don't have Eden, but I have White Eden which is just a sport of Eden, so they are very similar overall. Mine was in it's 1st year last year, but it only gave me 2 blooms. I'll be more interested in how it fares this year and how much more growth I get out of it. I feel it's mostly because of where it is planted as it's near a slope and Red Eden is also not throwing out any real long canes as I was hoping for. The big benefit of my White Eden is that the rose is pretty bare in terms of thorns and the blooms are quite large. I appreciate walking though my small arbor and not getting cut up by White Eden if I just so happen to brush up against it. At the moment it's only about 3 ft tall. I've heard others say it takes longer for Eden to settle in and start growing more vigorously, so I'm hoping that's the case. We have a Dortmund growing on a trellis at the Park of Roses in Columbus. It isn't very floriferous, but does throw out 3 or so long canes of about 9ft in length. With that said, that Dortmund isn't on a regular fertilization regimine and doesn't recieve as much care as if somebody owned it, so it could probably do better in somebody's hands personally.

Ilse Krohn Superior? Very double white, very fragrant flowers, pristine foliage, at least in this coastal blackspot inferno. Or, Sombreuil?

Of the 3, I would plant Eden... I seem to remember that Rorarium Uetersen and Dortmund both have some mean thorns. Rosarium Uetersen has a full bloom. Dortmund looks more like a 'single' rose, but it has lots of hips in Winter.
