Fire Ants in some of my pots!

I have about six container roses that are just chock full of fire ants. I should not have left them sitting in an area that has been recently disturbed, while waiting to be planted. The homeless fireants moved in as freeloaders.

I've tried sitting these pots for hours in buckets of water. I've tried letting them sit in the pond for awhile. These ants don't die! It looks like they can swim.

I broke down and bought some of the Bayer drench. (I know...I'm breaking some of my own "rules"). When I read the bottle it said it is not for container use. My question is this. Has anyone else used this product in container roses and caused them harm?

If I drench the containers and let them sit overnight I would take them out of the pots the next day and hose the rootball off. I'll then repot with fresh potting soil until I can get them planted. As they currently are, they are totally untouchable, and I have the welts to prove it.
