Which Austin English roses do I NEED to add next season?
Comments (84)Thanks Kate--I guess I've been very much on the fence about whether they'll tolerate the cold here, will just have to see I think. The flowers look so gorgeous I think I have to try anyway, so I was going to put in 4-5 and see. I'm essentially zone 6 in the backyard, so maybe I'll have success with them if you have. Do you winter protect? My neighbor did lose some HTs from year to year but he planted the bud union above ground and didn't winter protect. My Austins always seem significantly hardier and I was hoping these, although marketed as HTs, were more mixed lineage and would be hardier too. The beds are a bit elevated, which hurts cold-tolerance but helps keep things well-drained. But I can bury the bud unions and throw on some bark mulch or leaves in the fall, which may help. Okay, Peter is officially on the list, and I think I MUST have Liv and Yves Piaget--the flowers look too wonderful to pass up. Every weekend the ground stays workable I keep fixing up the beds to accommodate more roses...so now I have room for another order from Roses Unlimited!...See MoreWhat are you ordering from David Austin 2010???
Comments (18)rose_chalic - your Gertrude Jekyll looks very impressive. Is that only one bush? The problem with pruning too hard is, it takes a while for the rose to become big again. Right now, in the middle of Summer, my Gertrude Jekyll has been pruned hard with all the leaves removed and it looks like a stick now. I just contacted David Austin, and one of the reps told me that they will only release ONE David Austin rose in Australia (Munstead Wood). It's so unfair! Roses that never make it to our shore and that I like include: - Claire Austin - Princess Alexandra of Kent - Spirit of Freedom - Generous Gardener - Gentle Hermoine - Harlow Carr - Sister Elizabeth...and plenty more. Not fair :(...See MoreSmaller David Austins
Comments (19)All of my Austins are quite new, but for what its worth... Wife of Bath is another older smaller Austin. Mid pink- darker than Sharifa Asma, a bit lighter than pretty Jessica. Mine is only first year from a bareroot, but so far its produced more blooms than Sharifa Asma (also another little one, purchased at the same time). Mary Magdalene stays little and twiggy; the blooms are a lovely glowing light apricot in spring, but bleach out white in the heat of summer here- it does keep on flowering tho.. I don't grow Christopher Marlowe, but I have seen a few at a public rose garden here- it appears more like a carpet rose, growing not so much up, as along the ground- colouring changes from dark salmony pink to light apricot as it ages. Charles Rennie Mckintosh - another oldie- again, mine is a first year, looks like it wanted to mildew, but didn't; lovely big lilacy nodding blooms. Charlotte is another one that's supposed to stay small- blooms a lovely shade of buttercup yellow, but for some reason it didn't really grab me...that and its presently almost entirely defoliated with blackspot..grr I also second, or is that third ? Pretty Jessica. Prospero seems to do well for me too-nice dark plummy colour, and quite floriferous (i've been wanting to use that word for quite awhile now, hehe) Mine ( I have two) do throw up weird scarlet orange blooms just this time of year(start of summer)...See Morebest10 david austins for kentucky6b
Comments (34)Lesley , i am going with the albrighton rambler for a few reasons, one i want the customers to havr options and also want to stick with the english rose theme its supposed to be adorned with almost miniature english rose type blooms full and vuluptious although not too fragrant... also offering a rambler is important since most of the ( english climbers) only go up about 6-8 ft and lastly i was smitten i will be puttiing one of them in my cottage garden, turned gallery of david austins to show customers what they can have in their own gardens i like this idea!!!! But anyway the Albrighton rambler is beautiful and i hope it does well in our area its supposed to be very healthy....See Morejo_pyeweed (z9 SF Bay Area)
