Two H.F. 10 x 12 Greenhouses as One Structure

Just about finished with the construction of two Harbor Freight greenhouses as one unit with a doorway between the two. I was surprised at how good the instructions are after building the 6 x 8 size years ago. Overall a fun project and the all-up costs for a 10 x 24 ft. structure will be right at $1000.

mattwenfran "caved in the second winter and I have not figured out how to fix it." I used manual to identify what parts I needed to replace and called Harbor Freight and ordered parts they were very helpful. NOT all parts were available so I had to improvise sometimes, bending pieces the best I could such as the roof ridge was not available at the time so I used a Flat Mending Plate Joiner Repair Bracket to reinforce two piece roof ridge The snow load kit above has now weathered many storms just this week two feet of snow and it didn't flinch. I do rake snow off at some point during the day but I no longer panic when I here a storm is on the way overnight.

They are here waiting for you. :O) I am curious about the way this blind being on the inside portion of the shelves is benefitial for this person plants. Perhaps it doesn't get nearly as sunny or hot as it does for me for them. Right now everyday when I go out at about noon to check and make sure everything is okay in my greenhouse the outside air temp is around 80-85 degrees....but, in the greenhouse is is 100-110. I have to go in every morning and ramp up the fans......hose down the gravel.....mist my plants.....and make sure that any plants I carted in there for whatever reason are on the east side of the greenhouse...because anything over on the west side will totally bake in the sun and heat of the evening. I am going to figure out a way to attach a double layer of just regular old screen that you would put in screen doors on my west and back wall. I oriented my greenhouse to be out in the middle of my backyard so it would receive full sun on the west side so I could start veggie and plant seeds in the winter. Granted, where I placed it is in a narrower portion of my backyard...so it still has a little protection from wind...even with the extra bracing/caulking.ect, I still felt more comfortable having it closer to the house.

How tall is your GH? Is there space for another shelf above the ones you have planned? The reason I ask is because you also need to have room for fans to circulate the air in there or you may run into mold problems. Also, will you be using heating pads under your seed trays? If so you will need to consider where and how to run electricity to your GH. You may also need grow lights for young seedlings to avoid weak, leggy, floppy plants. So a second shelf above the current ones will give you a way to hang those lights. My GH is the same size as yours and I have all the shelves along the long walls. The back and front walls are taken up with electrical outlets, spigots, coolers, heaters, vents and fans. I have two rows of shelves constructed of expanded metal. The lower shelves are 30" deep and the upper shelves are 15" deep. I would like to have a row of shelves in the center aisle, but I use my GH for wintering over many plants that spend Summer in the yard, so I need the extra space for those. I do start a lot of plant trays in early Spring, and the reason for the heat mats and grow lights is the cooler temps and shorter days at that time of year. It's hard to fool a seed into thinking it's time to grow, but it can be done. Those seed starting mats are expensive but I have used regular heating pads that worked just fine. I only have two of them, so I start two trays just until the seedlings are up, then start two more. I found it not feasable to keep the GH warm enough to start seeds while I was trying to maintain other larger plants in there at the same time. Cheryl

I have had one for three years and for the price it is great. I have it bolted down to some railroad ties and most of the year I have the greenhouse plastic covered with shade cloth that is also anchored to the ties. The wind is blocked on the east side of my greenhouse but it has held up to 60mph winds. The roof will also hold a foot of snow but I try and knock it off before it gets that deep. Expect to replace the bungees that hold down the cover after two years and the cover should last at least three years. Bill

Nice job,I was thinking doing the same but the strong winds here in Bushland Texas,would destroy the greenhouses,

These structures are fairly lightweight. I have the same concerns as you do. The next steps are to reinforce the structure as seen on other sites and use plenty of screws to keep the panels in place. This greenhouse is in the Pacific Northwest and we do see 30-40 mph winds in the winter. I might have to sacrifice something to the Wind Gods and hope they have mercy on me!

Thanks for the link,A friend in Wichita Ks,did the same,and silicone all the panels in as well.I decided to go with 4x4 metal post tubing and c frame metal and luten clear span corrugated panels,size 20x30x12,for the wind reaches 70mph or more,several times a year .Going on 2 yrs come September,and it has done really well,but then the cost was tripled or more of the HFGH,hopefully it will pay off in time.Also went with a lean to structure,so I can enter from my back bathroom,as I have 5 parrots that also live in the greenhouse.

Great job, dbrya1...fantastic structure and quite an ecosystem with parrots!

I have not planned for 70 mph winds. That might be a bit much, even with the planned reinforcements!

Just posted a video of the two greenhouses (link below). I have not seen much online about exactly how put two kits together, so I am making it up as I go!

Looks real nice,if it was me,I'd think about installing trailer anchors on the inside from the gable down the sides to the ground,but if you don't get those kind of winds,You'll be fine.

Hi,

I have two 6 x 8 H.F. greenhouses that I have grown in for years, even used to have three together.

I would like to expand my two with regard to width by about 4 feet. I wonder if I bought one 10 x 12 if I could use the two halves to enlarge one side, and somehow connect the roofs of the two, the addition side higher, and the connecting part vertical. I realize the peak piece would only be 12 feet and I would need 16 feet. I have another 6 x 8 in the garage and could use the roof portion of that one, modified.

Does anyone think this is a possibility?

On harborfreight's website, there are 2 different item numbers for this greenhouse. Anybody know if there's any difference between them? Photos, price, descriptions are the same. The item numbers are: 93358, and 69893.

Model 69893 is the newer version of the Harbor Freight 10x12 kit. Model 93358 is the older version of the Harbor Freight 10x12 kit (I have this one.)

There have been some small changes to some of the parts (doors, floor plates, ceiling plates) and the shape of some of the back panels have changed. I'm not really sure what spurred these changes, and I honestly don't know why one would be any better than the other.

That said, I guess I'd probably choose the newer model, only because it seems logical that HF might discontinue replacement parts for the older kit, before they discontinue parts for the newer version.

The manuals are a bit different for the two versions. If you get your kit and some of the parts don't seem to match what's shown in the manual, you can download the correct one from the HF website. (I've had a few emails from folks with confusion resulting from having the wrong manual.)
